Modern M14 Mil-Spec Clone Build Spreadsheet

Over the last year I've been compiling a list of parts/configurations of the modern M14 (utilizing the Sage chassis) into a spreadsheet. Currently, the list contains information on the following:

USN/USAF Mk 14 Mod 0
USAF Mk 14 Mod 0 (SEI Rebuild)
USN Mk 14 Mod 1
USN Mk 14 Mod 2
USMC M39 EMR
US Army M14 EBR-RI
US Army M14 EBR-RI NM
USCG M14 T

Also omitted are models not utilizing the Sage chassis, and upgraded/modified commercial variants such as the M14 EBR-RI NM made by SEI.

I hope this helps anyone that intends to build a military clone rifle! The data was so spread out that I figured it might be helpful to compile it all in one place.

Please let me know if there are any corrections that need to be made. Any parts with a question mark after them (or highlighted in yellow) are ones that I was not able to confirm.

Great start and appreciate your hard work and time you put into a spread sheet for all of us to use as reference for the Sage EBRGI2. I am sure there will be more categories that will be added soon after. Awesome job!

I would not omit the category for the USAF Pararescue version because it is similar to US Navy Seals MK14 MOD 0 and part of the Arsenal of the SAGE EBR chassis.

All pictures I've seen with PJs using the EBR appear to be identical to the MK14 Mod 0.

Related to the USAF build, see the following quote is from ArnimFaber in a 2006 thread:

The USAF MK14 SEI's are interesting weapons in that they differ from the USN MK14 Mod O/1's in a number of key areas. First, they have the special 18.5" Crazy Horse barrel, chambered M118LR -- not the standard profile, chrome lined SAI "Bush" unit found on current USN weapons. Secondly, the handguards are modified to accept the SEI M14 MIL STD 1913 Mount, NSN 1005-01-506-5750 found on these rifles. The weapons also carry the S-7 trigger and hammer axis pins, as well as the new tool steel connector link pin. These last three items were supposed to go on the Navy weapons -- but the budget got in the way. I do not believe these weapons have the 4.5# M14SE trigger, as these are select-fire rifles. Could be wrong on that last count.

Every picture I have seen has the full-length top rail without the milling required for the SEI 2006 part. Furthermore, the rings in all of the pictures are Badger rings mounted atop the Sage SCSB, and not the SEI 2006 (NSN 1005-01-506-5750) mount. The S-7 trigger and hammer pins, as well as the steel connector link pin may be correct, but due to the inaccuracy of the other information, and no other confirmation of the internal parts, I left them out. The barrel in the pictures appears to be 18" but a half inch would be extremely difficult to see.

Internal parts are something that I have omitted from the spec. sheet as they are almost impossible to confirm unless they pop up on a BOM somewhere. As an example and general rule, just about any of the military M14's could have a NM spring guide in them, but it doesn't appear this was ever a specified part for any of the recent EBR chassis builds. Rather, old parts were simply used and it would be a coin toss which part ended up in the finished rifle (same deal with the USGI vs. NM sights on M39's and EBR-RI's).

If SEI built the rifle (USAF or USN MK14 Mod 0), they would probably have used the S-7 trigger and hammer pins, steel connector link, and the 18" standard profile barrel (chambered in M118LR). If you were talking about a commercial build from SEI, you might see the milling cuts and SEI 2006 mounted, as well. Similarly, the commercial EBR-RI NM built by SEI and seen a number of different places online differs in a few ways, also.

I personally use the tan sling issued with the Mod 0, but issued slings (and whether or not they were specified by who assembled the rifle) has been a bit of a gray area so far. I'll review some of the powerpoints, pictures and manuals later today.

EDIT: I've found 2 (maybe 3) pictures of M14 EBR-RI's with what appear to be Black VTAC-MK2 slings (NSN 1005-01-534-4361). Then, to add some confusion, there's the sling in these two pictures:

Both appear to be Blue Force Gear/Vickers SAW/M240 slings which would make sense given the weight of the EBR-RI. The giveaway for this is the large metal buckle in the first picture and the black forward section with the tan padded section in the second picture. Neither of these individual slings has an NSN to my knowledge, but the EBR-RI kit has it's own NSN (1005-01-D17-0487) which may or may not contain one of these slings.

According to the image title, the following is US Army's 10th Mountain Division and the sling shown doesn't appear to match anything I've seen in the other pictures:

Either way... nothing really definitive enough to change the list. Sorry!

mrsaturn7085, thanks for taking this research on. I'm going to build my own spreadsheet using your latest data for my own research purposes. I'll review it, cell by cell. Correct. The data I have on the build specifications for the various military M14 EBR variants comes from the builders themselves, TACOM-RIA, NSWC Crane, and Smith Enterprise, Inc. Feel free to share information, just saying that you may be triplicating some effort though. Hang tight, I'm working on this right now.

I'm making some good progress. I'm adding additional information to the .xlsx file such as years built, quantity built, builder, shims, other accessories, etc. Also, most of the information is lining up. I have the military manuals as well so that is helping. When I finish, the OP is more than welcome to post this for all to access on the Internet.

I chose to focus primarily on making this guide usable for someone looking to build the most correct mil-spec build possible, without having to rely on extremely rare or limited-production components (such as the full-length Mod 0 chassis or the first-run of the Mod 1). This is also why I have not included historical data such as production numbers, and variants within variants.

In a few cases, military parts can pose a problem. The NSWC Crane scope mount is a good example - similar to both the Springfield Blackfeather mount and the CASM mount, it isn't identical to either. I would probably call both of those commercial parts "preferred alternate parts" if I were to list them (coming from my background in aviation).

Glad to hear this list has been helpful to others, as well! It's definitely made it easier to keep my sanity while sorting out personal builds!

mrsaturn, no problem. I'll send my .xlsx file to you as soon as I finish. I'd like for you to review and give me your questions and feedback before you post it. We can discuss in this thread if you like or use e-mail, either way. I'm getting towards the end of it. I've added a bunch of data for various parts. Example, the U. S. Air Force Mk 14 Mod 0 rifles had SEI upgraded pins and springs. This compilation of all this shared data should make it very easy for those who want to build a Sage stock based M14 variant.

Only four boxes left in the main (rifle component) section of the document that need confirmation:

Mk 14 Mod 0 - which Leupold 3.5-10X scope was used by USN and/or USAF in 2004-2005?
Mk 14 Mod 1 - stock rider height (0.50" or 0.75") - almost certainly the 0.75", but very difficult to tell via pictures
Mk 14 Mod 1 - height of rings used (0.885", 1.125" or other) - 0.885" will work, but Nightforce has informed me 1.125" was used on the Mod 1
M14 EBR-RI NM - did the SEI gas cylinder have M80HT treatment?

The remaining lower section (slings, cases, cleaning equipment, etc.) will be filled in as information shows up.

First off thanks Mrsaturn and Different for all your work.

Next a question. Any ideas on the receivers used on all of these mods? All USGI? Did LRB or any other more modern receiver builders get involved in the mods, especially in the later rifles?

USGI can be confirmed, obviously. And I have read at least one or two reports of TACOM building on NM receivers (including the rear sight) during the EBR-RI builds; however, I haven't been able to confirm this in pictures.

Lastly, I think SEI is making receivers as well. I heard this from a pretty trusted source, but perhaps Lee could confirm/deny this?

For the M39 EMR, the front sight is USGI NM (part number 7791122) and the rear sight is the standard M14 aperture (part number 6008868) per the M39 EMR manual. Parts can be swapped out but the technical manual specifices a standard rear sight and a NM front sight. HTH
