458 SOCOM fiasco

So I jumped on the band wagon for the Thumper guns, and got the bad boy 458 socom from Rock River Arms. Got the gun, and didnt shoot 5 rounds, and had problems feeding/extracting. Took it to zero a red dot, and 2 cases sheared off in the chamber, and half of those 2 was stuck. Call RRA, send it back to get fix, the send it back say its all good. This is like 3 wks ago. Today, I go to zero my 1x4 AR scope for deer hunting on the hunting property, and shoot no kidding 6 rounds, and AGAIN the round shears in half.

Has anyone had this issue? Or can think of what the problem is? I paid WAY TOOO Much money for this upper, Relaoding Dies, and Ammo RNGR4 to be nothing but problems, when my best friend has a 450 Bushmaster and has put 80+ rounds through it with no problem.

Maybe I am just being a sally about this, I dont know.

I had a similar experience with some RRA uppers in .458 SOCOM. I bought 7 of them to split with some of my coworkers. All the feed ramps were obviously unfinished on them. I didn't get around to shooting mine but two of the guys that I sold them to did and they both had feed problems. No sheared cases but FTF's out the a$$. I collected all seven uppers and contacted the factory. I took several pics and sent them to my contact at RRA.

His response was, Oh, Those shouldn't have made it out of the factory. They had obviously not even been test fired or they wouldn't have made it out. I bought these on a LEO deal with a further cut for quantity. I sent them back and they were returned. No apology, no special perks for the hassle. Not what I was told to expect from RRA.

I haven't gotten around to shooting mine yet. Too busy with a 6.8 SPC build. I have dies and now picked up some reloading powder and bullets so in the next few weeks I'll give it a try. Of the other guys 2-3 have shot theirs with no further problems.

Here's a better place for answers!

I did alot of research before I took the plunge and the SOCOM came out the winner for several reasons. Bullet availability, accuracy, ability to use standard magazines. I could find no significant problems with the platform. The guys that got their uppers from me are now happy, the ones that have fired them that is.

I couldn't believe the lackluster response that I got from RRA however. On the good side the turnaround was fast and the barrels and bolts were replaced on all the uppers that I sent back. Now I just have to find the time to load up some ammo and get out to the range.

I have built a lower assembly dedicated to the 6.8SPC and the 458 SOCOM uppers. I used a LRB lower and Milspec parts from J&T Sales. I've had very good luck with the stuff that I got from J&T. This one is nothing fancy, just a standard lower setup.

I have two RRA 458 rifles. I have not had any problems except failures to chamber 405 grain bullets from a stock HK 30 round mag. The rounds plowed into the reciever below the feed ramp. 300 grainers worked fine.

The solution was to bend the lips at the front end (only) of the magazine up about 1/32". That put the top cartridge in the mag in a more nose up attitude. No problems since doing this.

Well I contacted RRA today, and asked for a refund, and they said that they wouldnt do that, and they wanted me to send the upper along with my complete lower! I was less than happy, as all the parts on this gun MINUS the LOWER are RRA! I have been a DEVOTE follower of RRA since I had hands on in the gun shop I managed. Heck I own 2 other rifles of theirs, so I didnt think I would have an issue. Now it seems I am loosing my faith in them after reading that more of this same issue is happening. I will say the Rep for them that I talked to has been helpful and very professional, and that has been the only bright spot in this frustrating situation. I will keep everyone updated on what they say....

Also, the 458socomforum isnt taking new members for some reason, I have tried for 2 wks to join after I got the gun back the first time it was "fixed"....

first was corbon 300gr DPX ($70 for 20 rds and I bought 60rd total....RNGR4) the first time, then RRA asked me to send the ammo and the upper. I had shot a total of 8 rds out of that box. They shot all that ammo, and when I asks them to send me corbon back, they said, no. I was floored...then after some choice words with the rep, he agreed to send me SBR ammo. I expected atleast ammo comparable to the stuff I sent...Nope, I got 350gr FMJs RNGR4. Rgr. They did at least send me 8 spent case so I could at least start to reload. Yesterday when I was zeroing my scope, I was using the SBR ammo in the thought that I wouldnt have to use my corbon, but now I am out ammo, time, money, and a gun GI1.

On another note, I got this round for its ability to deliver brute force to angry animals of the swine breed. After all this, I dont think I can trust it in a pinch when a happy Boar is charging me..
