ejector/extractor

hi. i have about 60 rounds through my new m305 and wondering what to expect. typically it'll throw brass in the 1 to 2 o'clock direction as expected. sometimes however it'll chuck brass into my face, and at least once it ejected to 12 o'clock and caused a stovepipe when the case jammed up in my scout scope.

otherwise, the first round requires some force to lock into battery (stiff extractor?) and brass is a bit dinged-up when it comes out of the rifle.

anything i should look into, or is this typical? new gun, cleaned really well and lubricated as per tonyben. shooting winchester super x 150 gr power-point.

Dinged brass is not unusual in semi-auto rifles. You say it requires some force to lock the bolt. How are you putting the first round in the chamber? Do you pull back on the op-rod and let it go or do you ride it down and seat it by hand? Try letting it go from the rear most position which is the way it is supposed to be done. Stovepipes happen from time to time. Do you shoot left handed?

thanks. so, when i am direct-loading the first round (ie, for 5+1) i ride the op rod down to avoid slam fire. in this case the op rod requires a push at the end to lock the bolt (engage the extractor i presume).

when i am starting from hold open and a fresh mag, if i pull back the op rod just enough to release the hold open and then drop it, it will often require the push at the end. if i haul back on the op rod it will lock ok. perhaps i'll just do it properly from now on!

i shoot right handed and had three cases come back at me over 60 rounds. i'd read that you can get cases coming back at 5 o'clock or so on the last round sometimes, but at least two of the instanced were on partially loaded magazines.

So when you do your 1+5, is it over a loaded mag or do you load the first round and then insert the mag. If no mag inserted let the op-rod go from about half way down and see how that works for you. Picture of your set up would help.

pic attached. mag is inserted after round is chambered and action closed.

if i drop the op rod from halfway down on a chambered round without mag inserted it lock into battery ok. and leaves a nick on the primer ...

A dimple on the primer is not unusual for a semiautomatic weapon with a free floating firing pin. Nothing to worry about.

How much farther down can you push the rounds in the magazine if it is a 5 round mag? The M14 action is designed to load fully loaded magazines with an open bolt. Loading with a closed bolt can put strain on the weapon and cause excess wear. If the mag holds more then 5 rounds then there is no problem.

it's a 20-round blocked at 5. there is some play in the follower; say a 5.5 round magazine ... regardless, i'll stop loading 5+1 (not a big deal, was just trying to fire two 3-round groups uninterrupted). further, i'll pay more attention to when the odd ejections happen; perhaps they did occur when the action was cycling on a full magazine ...

really appreciate the walk-though on this.

Thanks from smleenfield

Awards Showcase

I have a cat like that. He is very relaxed and consistent during most of our interaction, but then he tries to rip my face off for no apparent reason.
Sounds like your ejection problem.
