It may be hard to know for sure, but here's my basic understanding of early 'skinny' walnut stocked NM M14s made at SA: 1962 = 3,000 rifles. 1963 = 3,641 rifles. Total = 6,641 for those two years. My guess is the serial # in the stock channel is missing its first two digits of the original serial #. Looks like a very nice early NM stock.

(In 1964 they were made only by TRW, who delivered 5,515 NM rifles).

ON EDIT: Attached are pics of my early NM stock that M1Army restored for me, probably 1963 era based on serial # (see pic 3)

Russ you are so correct. They are not making these anymore, and when you find a nice one, you pay or someone else gets it.

A few years ago I found something rare on GunBroker and bid on it. A member here contacted me and said he bid on it first and asked me not to bid on it.

The guy had the nerve to ask me not to bid on it!!!

I tried to explain that I too wanted it, so let the best man win. He did not like that answer.

Guys this stuff we chase an’t cheap and if it is something rare like this NM Stock, you got to pay to play. Or accept that you are cheap, broke or fixed in the past when these things cause pennies on the dollar.

Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose, but I always have fun!

REN

RG! That's beautiful, but where's the rest of it? Tarnel, what is your grand vision??? I sent my stock funding over to creedmoor for a new jacket, so I'm going to take a deep breath and put these back in the pile for now.

Nice early NM barrel you have. As to your question, I’ve posted threads of this retro build, here’s the album:

I should note my early stock came to me very dry and had an area with some minor damage at the buttplate area, but M1Army brought it back to its current restored condition.

I can't believe that I missed this, especially in my searches. I salute you sir, on a remarkable rifle! The detail deserves the remarkable presentation and painting your zeros makes it truly correct.

I'm gonna have to dig out my examples,i believe I have 3 or 4 of them, one thing I noted on this stock it doesn't have a Proof P stamping and the smaller what I call duckbill stamp under it which is known to be a NM stamping as my M1 NM garands also I have,be patient but I will post pics of the stampings I'm talking about and will show ya my examples for comparison
