Sei socom adapter problem

This is a discussion on Sei socom adapter problem within the The M14 forums, part of the M14 M1A Forum category; I just received my socom adapter and it doesn’t thread onto my barrel. It goes maybe 1/4 turn and stops dead. What do should do?...

American rifle, I called smith and they told me to run Emory cloth over the threads on the bbl until the lock would thread. I tried that to no avail.

I'm not a super big fan of SEI- but they have a great track record with that adapter.

The other question I'd ask is it a ban state rifle or are you the original owner ?

On the Socom series from THE very first socoms, the ban state owners have tried to pin, silver solder, and generally bugger the threads in an attempt to add other brakes to lengthen the rifle or not make it sound like a blunderbuss once they get it- to either make it compliant or ?????

Seen several barrels from SOCOMS where they have been messed up because people thought they could take a die and thread for the castle nut.

That fine thread pattern is easy to strip as well if people are inexperienced.

The Chinese 16" rifle that was available in Canada but so far as I know are not legal here, as they were produced post Norinco and Polytech bans, they have had real problems with people not realizing the SEI's propreitary thread is different and the thread by the Chinese is not super consistent. It's not a high volume seller, even for M1A type rifles.

If you do not know how to calculate TPI, I'd read up. If you do know, then take an accurate caliper and figure out what you have on barrel thread, SEI is very consistent on these adapters so I'd say you know what you have there.

And don't be afraid to call Smith, they do value people being happy and they take some pretty serious pride in their QC.

They will help you figure this out, but I think you'd need to know what your barrel thread is and confirm it.

My rifle is brand new. The factory lock and the delta p thread on no problem. The sei lock won’t budge. The guy at sei told me that I could send my barreled action to them and they would install it for free if I covered shipping both ways. I’m going to just have them do it. Thank you to all 😀

that's the safest way. that way they can look at their product to see if there might be an issue,or see if the issue is with the gun. they got all the tools and know how. they could have changed the barrel threads

Well sei hasn’t responded to my emails or phone calls. Is there anything else I can try? The gas lock only threads on about one and half turns and gets super tight.

Probably not helpful, but I would say...

You an use the Delta P adapter if you still have it, and return the SEI.

You can buy another SEI adapter, and see if that works better, and if so, return the one that doesn't fit as defective (and how are they going to argue with that if one works, and the other doesn't.)

You can make a schedule to call them at different times of the day and keep at it until you get somebody. My only experience with them is buying a 'warfighter' gas system, and I've got no complaints with it or them, but it did require a few phone calls simply to get the order through, and when it came, it didn't have the spare parts kit I asked for, though they didn't charge me for it either. Point being, they may not be as organized as some companies, particularly ones that have a dedicated employee for taking calls and relaying messages, let alone dedicated customer support staff. Plus, with the whole COVID stuff, may not have people in the office...

Just my thoughts. Hope you find a relatively easy resolution.

I had very much the same issue when I installed mine.
It seems the threads between the SEI and SAI and a little of of spec with each other. I had to thread it on a little at a time, back it off wipe it down and continue til it was snug and timed with shims. Threads on and off no problems now. Stock brake still threads on as well.

Here is a link with similar issue:

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

SEI is real hit or miss on phone calls, they used to get alot of calls from armorer's like me and supply units.

I'm sure it's still the case plus running a skeleton crew for COVID.

Ron is real active on the M14 groups on Facebook

We ought to make a Facebook group for this forum.

Why not? At the moment Facebook is the be all end all of social media. If I get into something or am interested in something Facebook is my first search.

I don't know , I find it strange that you would need to send a Barreled Action in just to screw on an adaptor , nice that they offered to do so , but just odd to me . Might be in the way one or the other threads are made , rolled or cut , or what ever way they are made , be it the Barrel or Adaptor . I guess it also could be the finish applied to the Barrel or Adaptor also .

I thought it was weird as well, I’m reluctant to send my rifle but Ron said he would take of me. I just tried to thread it on again and I can only thread it about a turn and it’s very very tight. The factory brake and my delta adapter thread on just fine. Maybe my barrel threads are just out of spec 🏻
