I can get one at a great price, but with no alignment keys, and only a few reviews, half of which are bad, I am probably going to pass on this deal.

A search on this site will pull up a lot of unhappy M1A owners who reviewed the SAI gen 4 mount.

Never had/used one myself.

I have a Bassett standard Picatinny mount.

Irons can be used looking under the scope.

I searched but did not find much. Maybe I misspelled something. I will look again...

I found a lot more info the second time with the search. Yes, these SA gen 4 steel mounts have a very poor reputation. It is a shame because I like the split rail design and its length.
I still would like to hear from any others about these mounts.
I just cant believe SAI would make this mount without alignment keys.

The SAI Gen 4 mounts are not all that bad. They are a direct knock off of the Brookfield design, a three point mount and they do have a bottom alignment rail. That said, the biggest problem Springfield has with mounts is not the mounts as much as their receivers scope mount ways being non-concentric with the bore axis.

I never used one. I have a friend that used one on his Polytech M14.......he currently does not own that mount anymore and now has a low Picatinny Bassett mount if that mean anything. I will ask him what he thought about t.

"Not all that bad" is not a good way to have a product described.

Thanks from ConRich

I have the Sadlak mount and it is off Axis. But it works great, there is a pic
of it on my avatar.
Know this: Anytime Ted Brown speaks one should listen. I wish I knew 1/2
of what Mr Brown has forgotten about the M14.

Ted, the Springfield Armory gen 4 steel mount I have looked at does not have alignment keys on it at all, completely flat. I thought it was odd, but several others have verified that SA did indeed make this version with no keys at all. The gen 4 aluminum mount does have keys. I had an aluminum mount gen 4 for a short while. It worked fine, but I upgraded to a Sadlak.

I hope you didn't misunderstand me by thinking I was ranking on Ted. I agree the main problem is with the grooves (ways) in the receiver being out of spec. and that the mounts aren't all that bad. Screwy though, that their own mounts may not fit their own receivers.

Thanks from ConRich and charliefrye

No problem and no offense taken. I should clarify that the Gen 4 mount is one I don't have a lot of experience with. A few have come in for installation since they were introduced. When installed on Springfield M1A rifles they usually require some tweaking, but so do most others due to the non-concentricity issue. Brookfield style mounts have the ability to be adjusted to align with the receiver on both axis. I use an old gage I got from Armalite many years ago. It was meant to be used to align the AR15 front sight base, but works well with the Picatinny rails on M14 scope mounts. A straight 3/8" steel rod can also be used as a gage.

Let me get this straight. A Springfield accessory made for a Springfield rifle has a bad reputation? Am I missing something here? How do they screw that up?

The only way a manufacturer can screw up so badly so consistently is because the principals just don't care. A reputation is a description one achieves over a lengthy period of time and becomes undisputable.

They have earned their poor reputation for lack of quality, especially in the last decade, and seems to be getting worse. This is what happens when all you care about is the bottom line "money". They do not seem to understand a poor reputation will result in many lost sales/profits. So sad.
