PS: I actually like the big knob screws that come with the SAI mount.
You'll never find a 12-32. It would have to be custom made.

wasted enough time trying to get those SAI mounts to work.

DITCH THE SAI SCOPE MOUNT. After attempting too many times to get a SOLID RELIABLE connection between this type of mount and the receiver, I finally designed the M14.CA TOP mount. It works.

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday, since I already did it awhile back, but I took the SAI mount off quite some time ago.

That's what I did, not a problem if you have a lathe and know how to run it. Trick is not making the main mounting bolt so long that it interferes with the left side of the bolt. I made mine because I stripped the big knob, was awful easy to do.

Hex head bolts have no place on a firearm. Kinda like Phillips head screws on a traditional muzzleloader. I changed to a different mount about a year later, and I am probably going back to irons if my new prescription works.

#12 (.216)-32 NEF-2B is specified in the Machinery's Handbook so it should be available. I've read that the aircraft industry uses them but typically you wont find them.

Here is a link to a tap and die set.

I had that same mount for about 6 months. Worked ok at first, but is ugly and cheap feeling. Zero started moving.... Replaced with a Sadlak Titanium mount. Many years later it is still holding zero and working perfectly. It looks sweet too!
Best of luck to you on getting it to work reliably.

Hence the gen 4 they still can’t get it right, meanwhile back at the ranch everybody else is eating SA’s lunch.

I am new to the M1a although I did pick up a deal on a loaded that came with a 2nd rifle
Came with a basset and a SEI mount. Then I borrowed a SAI Mount.
I did not like the looks of the SAI mount at all. Just looked, well not good.
I then mounted the SEI. Itís solid enough but I did not like that it was now part of the rifle.
Last up , the one mount I dismissed on looks alone. Basset. It looks good, not bulky and I can remove it easy enough. Reminds me I need to order a replacement wrench to put on my key chain.
Note to Bassett there should be 2 wrenches in the package

I'm awaiting my two free mags and gen 4 scope mount from the Gear Up Promotion to come in. Email said allow 8 to 12 weeks I believe it was. I have no intention of using that mount. As with popular opinion here, I think it's just plain old ugly lol. I think I'm just going to shoot it with open sights. Eye Doctor appointment on 03/23/19 - new prescription for new glasses. I just recently got the rifle, and shot it well just plinking around. The story will be told when I shoot paper though. My vision isn't all that bad. I was able to shoot it comfortably without my glasses. But I have grown fond of magnified optics - I find in the real world it helps - I'm slightly color blind, which makes me, as you might guess, the worst hunter in the nation I do believe lol. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the mount. I saw a vid stating once you mount the gen 4 mount, it will only fit your receiver - wondering if part of it forms to the receiver or what - not sure why that would be. If I mount an optic on it, I'll use a Sadlak. Was very glad to see your post, as I had toyed with the idea of using different bolts too - those huge knobs just look hideous. But Sadlak just seems to be the way to go for the M1A. I'm also toying with the idea of mounting the scope forward, such as on the Scout Squad models - just think the weight up front would eventually have me removing it.

Yes, this is another good idea instead of just copying old stuff. I can appreciate it.
