I think finally we can say that the TRW rear sight base has be identified! Thanks to those that contributed the pictures, another piece of the puzzel has been solved!

Man,here is a thread 1 1/2 years old, and the first time I've seen it !!! Very interesting. Now I'll have to check my rifles for this TRW rear sight base, but I doubt if I will find one...

Thanks from XM25Ren

Any consensus on pinions and knobs for TRW rear sights? I've always been led to believe it's typically WCE elevation pinions and Wright windage knobs for TRW assemblies, what does the forum say?

Yes, Wright windage knobs and either NHC or WCE elevation pinions.

TRW Sights

I previously posted these pics on another site and Ren agreed that this is a TRW sight. This came on a late 80's all TRW Federal Ordnance rifle I inherited from my father-in-law.

TRW Sight

After thinking about it a bit, I went downstairs to check the sight for more details and found it has the following:

WCE Elevation Pinion
SHN (Standard Horse Nail) Windage Knob

This information was presented six years ago and some people are still unaware.

Itís a bump for those interested in M14 history.

Ever look closely at the area around the aperture, ever notice the differences and ask why. In the following pictures you will see a marked Winchester rear sight base, an unknown NM sight base and a TRW rear sight.

This side by side picture shows the area around the aperture channel and the two are very different. Notice how one is sharp and pronounced and the other is rounded and sloping.

The TRW base is the one on the left and has the sloping sides where the other has the sharp edges.

Here is a known Winchester rear sight base(stamped OM B3). Notice the same area around the aperture it is also sharp and not sloped, only the TRW rear sight base had that feature and makes them easy to identify.

These are photos of a demilled TRW rifle, if you look you will see the rounded edges on the rear sight base.

This photo is of TRW manufactured M14s, notice the rounded edges on the rear sight base.
