I think I'll just take the brake off and shoot without anything just to get an idea of how loud it is with nothing on there.
Granted, any hearing loss is not accetable.

But it hasn't taken that big of a toll if shooting the scout with plugs and muffs still bothers you.

Scout too loud

The first time I shot this scout it rang my ears like a short 357, no muffs. I took an old usgi and cut it in two, rounded it. This helped a lot . I can shoot it now with no muffs . Don't get me wrong , it's still loud, but it don't put you in shell shock

With any of my M14 types, I use plugs and muffs, and it seems also important to make sure that your eye protection isn't breaking the seal on the muffs. Glasses and muff seals will vary.

If you use a standard flash hider be sure to use the one without the bayo lug, otherwise you won't be able to pull the gas plug when needed.

you can put ear muffs over the plugs. you can also get one of those lrb arms fake flashiders that would throw the blast forward.

Thanks from nf1e

Search for "blast diverters", they direct everything forward which really helps. I would still recommend hearing protection

I've been shooting the M14 and its civilian counterparts for 35 years. The seem no louder to me than an M1 Garand, but it could be that the years have had a dulling effect on my hearing

Reminds me of that quote from Clint Smith about the Garand-ping not being a big deal, "You just shot eight rounds of 30-06, everyone is DEAF!"

Good Morning from frigid NW Wisconsin!
Roughly two months ago, I bought a used/unfired Springfield Armory Inc. M1-A Brush rifle. Made in July of '96, it has the standard govt. flash hider. When I phoned the factory for a manufacturing date and told the guy who answered what it is and the serial number, he laughed and said, "Those are loud! Are you using hearing protection?" I answered that I am currently wearing two hearing aids, does that answer your question? He chuckled again and said "Yup". Fifty plus years of shooting has taken care of my hearing.
When I hear something I don't like on the news, the next day I make sure I put a magazine full of rounds from the Brush rifle down range. It never fails that I get an answering series of shots from one or two other shooters in the neighborhood. (Keep in mind I live in the "wilderness" with scattered homes on many lakes). I do shoot milder loads in my rifle thanks to the Schuster adjustable gas plug, and I think that does help (less propellant to start with). It seems that the Scout rifle SAI sells today has a real long muzzle break on it and that may contribute to the noise?
Keep wearing hearing protection. Once your hearing is gone...you get fairly good at reading lips!

I’d remove it completely and see if there’s a difference. Basically like shooting a regular target rifle and if it’s different, look into devices.

I know an 18in barrel is going to be loud and nothing short of a suppressor is going to help much, but will changing to the springfield flash suppressor help much? Is there any certain type of flash suppressor that helps with muzzle blast better than others?

This brake has got to go!

If you're gonna swap the muzzle device I'd go with VG6 for the .300BK and get the cage. if you no likey get one of those "Blast Shields" that throws the noise down range.

I haven't tried this particular version, I got the version prior, but the one I have is definitely quieter with the shroud involved...

Also have not tried, but others have with no some positive and no negative feedback...
