Idle FAL question

Don't know where to put this but I was wondering just how easily modifiable the FALs are? Can I buy an old beat up example and readily turn it into what I see of the DSA's? Is there a lot of aftermarket stuff out there? They pop up for various prices here in Maine and I'm thinking that may be the next thing I save towards.
Thanks.

The FAL is rather easy to customize. There are some basic tools that make everything much easier.

The biggest issue I have found over the years is the quality of the receiver. My preference has always been Imbel which have gone up dramatically in price. They were practically "giving them away" back in the day. Second choice for me is DSA. They are still relatively available and reasonably priced.

Re-barreling is a bit more challenging. The head space is controlled by the locking shoulder which comes in different sizes. You may precision grind one to fit if the one you have is "nominally" over sized. Other sizes are still readily available.

Furniture is simple to change with rail systems sometimes requiring minor fitting.

Stock or mil-spec riggers are like pulling a rat trap. Have had a few good ones, but most are terrible.

It is a very reliable platform and I am glad I built and own a few. Checks "FAL Files" for a ton of info and people far more versed than myself.

Don't let anyone fool you. The FAL will never be an M14!!!

Hi,
Well, the FAL hardly has to compete with an M14...

Both rifles, "have been there and done that"...

It's just a matter of taste and I like both!

DSA only makes cast receivers now, as was stated IMBEL forged was the way to go back in the day.

Be advised, these rifles have to have so many, USA MADE parts to be compliant...

Something you might want to check on with the seller, if you buy a parts kit rifle, that was originally made outside the USA.

That is where I headed for FAL information. Great forum. I like M14 Forum more.

IIRC DSA just released a new line of forged receivers. Not the coveted LMT manufacture but forged none the less. QC seems to have improved over the last 2 years as I hear fewer fit issues being reported by those who build FAL’s professionally. I don’t have a DSA cast receiver in the safe but those built recently are reported to be good receivers especially the Type 2.

PARS was still selling NOS Imbel receivers for $550 last time I looked.

Well built kit guns are reliable and enjoyable to shoot. The sights don’t compare to the 14 and as mentioned the trigger weight is pretty heavy but a fun rifle regardless.

Don’t know what your budget is but from time to time you’ll see factory Imbels built for and imported by Springfield as the SAR 48/4800 for a little over 2K. Expect to pay near twice that for a Belgian FAL.

Thanks from luigi

Iíve got a dozen or so FALís with 3 of those built on matching BGS kits from rifles Belgium did on their first contract for the German Border Guard. Two have SN matched forged receivers Entreprise built on a special run around 2012. The third is on a DSA/LMT forged receiver. Youíd have to go north of 2K to pry them out of my safe.

Can you? Sure.

Should you? Only if the old beat up example is based on a reputable receiver and builder.

If you have a specific one you're looking at then post a pic or link.

Thanks for the very educational responses guys, seriously. There was one I was looking at that disappeared recently. Dude stopped responding. I wish people would just write a 2 word email back for any of these online classifieds. "She gone" would be better than nothing at all. I have three different emails out there right now waiting. 2 of them are people that responded to my want ads saying 'i have what youre looking for'. I wrote back 'fantastic, how much?' and... crickets. Why go through the motions at all??
