As usual with the M113's in VN troopers riding on top of the vehicle.Gasoline M113 in particular,Aluminum and mines (IED's)didnt mix.Heard credible storys of molten piles of M113s that had mixed it up w-RPGs/mines.Didnt Carlos Hatchcock win a Silver Star/Purple heart or other Award/Purple Heart for rescuing troopers from an ablaze M113?
curious as to how the upgraded M113 A2-3's etc have performed in Iraq/Afghanistan.Anyone?

The device in front of it looks like some type of mine or bunker clearing device that has been "Yankee Engineered" from something else .. |

If memory serves the M60 saw very limited service in Vietnam primarily due to its weight (some 58 tons). The only time I saw them was on QL1 at Dong Ba Thin for a short time at the checkpoint on the north side of the base. I have read they were delegated to highway and air base security.
The boxy thing on the front should be the lighting system. They had both IR and Xenon systems on the turret.

I thought he meant the object that was fixed down low to the front of the tank ... oops, my bad. |

The two arms coming off the front of the treads on each side, I believe, are a mine clearing/marking system built by Pearson Engineering. I know they were supposed to be used in Operation Desert Storm but I don't know when they were developed.

The engineers had a few specially equipped with a dozer blade in the front. There were stories of a flail system with a rotating drum spinning cables for mine clearing but I don't know if they were ever used on the M60.

I did some online research and found what I think was on the front of that M-48 tank.
I think it was the "arms" for the ENSURE 202 Tank Mounted Mine Clearing Roller without the "rollers". |
