The south lost, the north won. We're one country. We are the USA.
sometimes.......and only sometimes.......it's not whether you win or lose but how you play the game.

Lee could have held out for decades more with a guerilla war campaign to extend the bloody carnage but out of his respect for life and duty to be an American he chose to do what was best for the country. if Lee never surrendered and opted for guerilla warfare then we would still be having contras in the streets like in Northern Ireland and Palestine. i guess what im saying is that winning a war does not prove you right. sometimes the hero is the one who sacrifices his pride for the good of the people. if only Grant and Sherman ....and yes, Lincoln could fathom the concept.

Only in the southern mantra would this be placed as fact. If Lee had not surrendered (and he was a realist to have done so), the south would have been completely destroyed and all combatants rounded up and executed.

Lincoln sacrificed his pride with his reconstruction policies to rebuild the country and put the war behind. He went against powerful interests in his administration to do this. Do you remember why Johnson was impeached?

And it is interesting you said Lee "out of his respect for life and duty to be an American he chose to do what was best for the country." He knew he was in a civil war and decided to do what was best for the country after he lost.

Too bad he didn't make that decision in 1861.

And I do agree, Lee was an admirable man. Flawed like all of us, but a man of honor and dedication. Just like Lincoln.

Yes long over....

Well I don’t think any of us here will ever contest that fact. A fact of history, that the C.S.A. was conquered by a belligerent invading nation from the north. But no matter what, I’m still very proud of the fact that both of my GreatGreatGrand Pappies, fought and Soldiered as Confederate “Legs” during said WNA… One was a member of Co. E, (Calhoun Rifles) 2nd Mississippi Infantry Regiment, the other a member of Co. G, 16th Alabama Infantry Regiment. One was captured at Gettysburg on July 1st 1863 and spent the rest of the conflict at Ft. Delaware as a Union POW. After the events at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9th, 1865, both GreatGreatGrand Pappies did their best to escape the repressive and punitive measures of “Reconstruction “ by immigrating to the IT = Indian territory. There to rebuild their lives anew and start families. They volunteered, know one offered them a cash “bounty” =

Yeppers the South did loose, a historical fact, but it will never every diminish or erase my pride in my Ancestors. Both who volunteered, fought, lost and then swore their oath to the Union and moved on with their lives.

It would appear some “Yankees” still hold a grudge it would seem??

Best Regards to All, IC2(SS)19Z50C5, Colorado born and proud of it!!!

I too am proud of my 20 plus relatives who sacrificed their lives for the Confederacy. And my 10 or so who fought for the north.

Sad, so sad they gave all when the south attacked the north at Ft Sumpter and began the Civil War.

As a Virginian-American, oh wait. No as an American, it's long been over for most of us.

i was actually trying to respect your debate stance and held your comments with a few stands of clout until this comment. this is statement makes absolutely no sense.

FYI....Ft. Sumpter is located in South Carolina. so explain to me where the "North" was first attacked? Gettysburg was the only battle fought in the North which was over two years from the start of the war.

if you are priding your arguments on "fact" then you need to get your facts straight.

I take pride in this. If you look at the rest of the world, they still get into regional/ethnic/religious conflicts based on stuff that happened 500 years ago. When Americans have disagreements, and we got plenty, it's because of what's happening NOW.

Your great grandma beat up my great grandma? Well, I'm sure she had it coming. But right now you're parked in my front lawn and you need to move.

A good tv (mini) series to check out is Stephen Fry In America. He's a fairly famous British actor who tours America and he gives his impression of our states. I enjoy seeing how other countries view my home. I think it was 1st episode he starts in NE and 2nd episode he goes to the South and he talks about the differences. Pretty interesting.
