Stoner

Hi
Does anyone remember the Stoner I believe it was the M-63 A but could be wrong.
I was zeroing in my 14 at monkey mountian when some seal's showed up with some Stoner's to try out. It looked like a 16 but was different and used the .223 caliber.
While there we struck up a conversation and they let me test fire one. It put out a massive amount of firepower.
The only problem I could see with it was the small caliber.
Did anyone use these and what are your evaluation on this rifle.
I have never seen one since then and wonder if they had problem's and that is why they dissapeared.
Thank's
Greg

Did it look like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoner_63

If I am not mistaken the IRA used to use these... or at least had some of them

To cachuck

Hi
Thank's for the link. That is the rifle.
By reading the discription's on the link the one I shot was probaly the commando version.
I know it had the drum mag and seemed to have a shorter barrel then the one in the picture but that was a long time ago and I could be wrong.
Again thank's for the link.

I've got the semi-auto copy(M96) that Robinson Arms used to make. I have the Recon(16" carbine) and the top-feed(Bren gun style). Great shooting rifles and very accurate. To bad Robinson Arms no longer supports them(doesn't make or sell parts).

look for one

Hi
I had a blast firing the rifle in the short time I had with it. I think I will try to find a good used one.

You do know that the full auto ones run about $70,000.00. That's for a used one.

surprise

Hi
No way I would spend $70,000 for a rifle as much as I like them.
I was thinking of one of the copy's that were made later.
I don't really want a full auto because of the ammo cost. I could only afford to shoot every other year or so.
Thanks for the info though.

Isn't it crazy that the full-auto's go for so much! I think it's a little more understandable for the belt-fed machine guns to go for prices like that, but a rifle? Crazy!

Sir, Thank you for your service.

Finite supply, there are very few registered Stoner's out there and you are buying a universal receiver, with the correct parts you can convert the rifle to the MG. Of course the parts are super expensive also. The law in 86 locking in legal full autos has totally perverted the market, M16's going for $12,000 come on.

Thanks from gregaba

I always think of 'Monkey Mountain' as being at An Khe!
I'm going to assume Your 'Monkey Mountain' was near Da Nang?
When Were You There? I spent 7+- Months in Northern I Corps with the 1st Cav Div in '68...
I wonder How Many 'Monkey Mountain's there were in Viet Nam?

Hi
The Monkey Mountian I was refering to was south of Da Nang about if I remember 12 klick's south. It was the SF headquarter's for I corp.
I had a good friend who was at the camp and when I would go to visit him we would have a few and play around on their range. It was a great break from the field and really helped my moral the 3 time's I could get up there.
We would check out verious weapon's from the amorer and I would get to try out different weapon's that I would never get to see if it wasn't for my friend.
I was there from 67 to 69. Was medivaced out on Dec. 69.

Hi
I used to run patrol's up and down Hwy 1 from Chu Lai to Tam Key when I was in country the first month or so before we went to the boonie's. Might have seen you there.
I usually managed to catch a hop on a Huey when I was able to get to Da Nang because I would only get a day or two to go up there.
I think there were about 5 million Monkey Mountain's in VN as I can think of 5 I was on but the main one was at Da Nang.

Stoner also designed this LMG for Knight's Armament Corp

It looks similar, but is a later design, and more likely to be in current use by SEALS.
