I was fortunate to have served with veterans of the infamous death march who were rounding out their twenty or thirty and they got a lot of respect. The remnants of the 4th Marine Regiment surrendered on Corregidor three weeks later and fared little better. The Jap claim that these atrocities were due to confusion and/or military necessity is nonsense because they committed the same brutalities to allied prisoners everywhere, throughout the war. One I knew well was a POW on the home islands and often said that if the atomic bombs hadn't been dropped, he wouldn't have made it because he couldn't have lasted another thirty days. It irritates me when people deride me for using the term Jap, but those animals are about as much like today's Japanese as Nazis are like today's Germans and to members of my generation, they will always be Japs.
Sadly, some of these career men were captured again during the Korean war and endured a repeat of their WWII experiences. America can never show enough gratitude to the POW's of these wars. IMHO, any politician who seeks to downgrade our military
ignores their sacrifices to a level that borders on criminal.
