VA benifits for Reservists

I did 6 years in the Army Reserve and I was told I do not get benifits for this. I was told this by the moble VA unit that goes around signing up vets. My dad and older vet friends get some of there medical treatments there and look at me like I am crazy for not doing the same. I was hurt in training and had to have a hernia repair and I think to this day I have some hearing lose from gun fire and loud truck noise. I have real good heath care Insurance but this has always burned my a$$. I hate the VA because I had to jump through hops the last time I delt with them over my GI Bill for trade school. I never went over seas to the Gulf War but I trained for it.
God bless you guys that get it, but I don't know if I would want it from the way they treaded me.
I am not a dead beat looking for a hand out. I have worked from the time I was 16, I am 38 now. I have always had a job. I am being told Social Security will not be there when I am 65. My rant is over.

confused, in one breath you say you want benefits, and in the next you say you wouldnt take them if you got them! if you want and think you are owed benefits, locate your counties Veteran Service Officer. the VSO's can find out if your eligible, and if your eligible, they'll get you in to see the VA C&P doctors. if that doesnt get you where you want, pick one of the many veterans groups to advocate for you (DAV/VFW/AMERICAN LEGION). i'll tell you straight up, having had a hernia will not get you disability, hearing loss on the other hand could make you eligible.

The bottom line is if you can prove that you either incurred an injury while on active duty for training or a previous injury was made worse then you have the right to make a claim. I would contact a local Veteran's Service Representative from the DAV or American Legion and see what they recommend. While you do not qualify for non service connected medical care through the VA if you were to obtain a service connected disability you would then be able to get care for that disability through the VA.

This is just some basic info I found on a federal web site;

Benefits for Reservists and National Guard Members

Is someone with only Reserve or National Guard service eligible for VA benefits?

If the member is called to active duty, then he/she is eligible for the same VA benefits as any other veteran, including those for dependents and survivors. The member must meet the same length of service requirements.

If the member has no active duty service, are any benefits available?

A member who has never served on active duty may still qualify for the following benefits:

COMPENSATION
Monthly benefits may be payable if the member has a disability that resulted from a disease or injury incurred while on active duty for training, or an injury, heart attack or stroke incurred during inactive duty for training. Additional benefits for the member and his/her dependents or survivors may also apply.

Like I said my dad and friends said I should use the VA medical services. I did not go looking for it because I don't need it. I was at a place that had the mobile unit signing up vets for there services and I asked and was told I do not get nothing. I am cool with that. There are way more deserving vets that truely need it. If I did need it then that would have pissed me off because I have done all the right things in life, like serve the country and work for aliving and pay taxes. This country gives to much to those that do nothing for this country thats all I am saying. I don't want nothing from the VA. I will take care of myself like I have done for the last 20 years of my life.
