My Dad is retired CG and Viet Nam vet. I read a book, cant recall the name, but there was one passage that had me rolling. When the Guard first arrived in their patrol boats and went up the deltas, the VC left them alone thinking they must have some real special magic going up there in these seemingly unarmed boats! Of course they found out soon enough they were really just lightly armed and really gave them hell after that.
My Dad also told us a story about putting his boat between the cowboys and indians to let the cowboys get away. The boat was full of holes. Years later I found out they saved a bunch of Jarheads.
While on Guam at this time I think around '72, my Dads ship was called out on a SAR around Christmas for a downed B 52 off Guam. Years later while talking to a bus driver on the way to school, I found out he was aboard the B 52 my Dads ship rescued...small world.

Yes when the tuna boats stay in and we have to go and rescue some one who has no common sense, it's bad weather! Been there, done that!

I was a resident LEO in the early 80's and was on the Point Chico 82' cutter when they got sent to Seal Rock off Gualala, Ca. The skipper took the ship straight into 20+ seas to rescue a 48' sailboat from Alaska that had been dismasted. We spent the whole trip North taking green water over the bow, washing the decks in feet of water to save the crew on the sailboat. Those guys just took it as another run, not a big deal. It pretty much cemented my respect for the Coastie's.

I was at thr 25th anniversary of The Wall and there was a group of Coasties who had served together.
I believe they were on the way to see one of them get a belated Navy Cross.

CG did their time like all the rest of us.
