| Phony Green Beret Verification
How would I check to see if a person was actually a Green Beret with service in Vietnam ? Is there a website or organization where I can check this out ? His story sounds a little too good to be true and I would like to check it out before asking to see his DD-214.

This might sound a little cynical, but I have found that those that talk about it the most are the least likely to have actually done it.
It's sad, but barroom credentials are about equal to internet credentials.

| Phony's
I would like to add a few choice words to describe phony's but can't of course! Check out: http://authentiseal.cyberseals.org/resources.htm
They have information on how to verify an individuals service.

Most posers have diarrhea of the mouth and do a fine job of giving their self away. I also have found that those who did & seen the most, talk about it the least also 2336USMC. |

| I Heard Some Of The Best War Stories From A Cook. He Didn't Know He Was Telling Them To A 11b Rifleman Who Spent A Tour In The Jungles Of Vietnam. If He Talks About It Without An Enormous Amout Of Alcohol, don't Pay Him Much Mind. ASK HIM ABOUT HIS UNIT WHERE SERVED, IF VIETNAM,ASK ABOUT MPC,MILITARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATE.THAT WAS OUR MONEY OVER THERE, EVERY ONE THAT WAS IN COUNTRY KNOWS WHAT THAT IS.

I thought that the 201 file was what was used to record such things. DD214 records time in service, rank, awards and decorations, and also your enlistment code. I probably missed something, I have'nt looked at mine in a while.

The DD214 should show all military schools (successfully completed). It should show/confirm Airborne School and the Q-course. If they aren't there, neither was he.

I knew the DD214 listed schools, because it lists under awards and decoration things like the stated Jump wings, Ranger tab for completion of Ranger School, marksmanship badges, EIB or CIB, and also ribbons for NCO development schools like PNOC, BNOC etc. It does not list units served in, or places deployed, or even TDY status ever completed.

I love to talk to the wannbees. Years ago I used to get angry and ignore them, but I have changed my outlook. It is more fun to mentally poke holes in their conversation.
My favorite was a guy who claimed to have served with the 82d in Vietnam. I mentioned that the 3d brigade was the only infantry unit there and asked him which unit he was in.
He replied "82d Airborne"
I asked again, no, which unit within the 82d?
He said "Oh, 3d company, 4th platoon"
I chuckled and knew he was a BS artist.

I was a door gunner on the space shuttle.........very hush hush.... ....we were an elite group, you only got it if you had Airborne Scuba Sniper training first........
Sounds like a few BS artists I've ran into over the years. Ask him what color the boathouse at Hereford is.

With all the Masses of Green Berets, Rangers, and SEALS around...I guess I was really in a very tiny, Very Elite unit.
I was a Field Medic for 4/7 Cavalry. Then I was a Flight Medic with a Dustoff unit for 5 years before going to Physican Assistant (PA) School. . Total of 10 years Active and Guard service.
I am very Proud of my service, and don't need to be a SF type...I am just glad to have survived my time with the Medical Corps!
