Non-vets wearing military bling?

This is a discussion on Non-vets wearing military bling? within the Veterans Affairs forums, part of the Armed Services category; I thought the movie Starship Troopers had the right idea. You become a citizen with voting rights after serving your military time. I realize we ...

I realize we all have rights in this country whether we earn them or not. Someone has to do the dirty work.
Took me a few years to learn to respect scummy civilians after being taught they were totally worthless and lower than whale doo doo. There happens to be a percentage that are OK. Some members on this forum are excellent examples.

Well if we want to get technical, loose the necktie, the buttons on suit sleeves, cargo pants, epaulets and bell bottoms!

So if we didn't serve we are scummy civilians and should not be able to vote or be citizens. That is an outrageous statement. I doubt that many vets share your sentiment. None that I know do. Also is every vet pure as the driven snow and never does anything wrong? Or is it just scummy civilians that commit crime and do bad things? Most Americans have not served in the military so again, you are disparaging a lot of folks in this country simply because they didn't. This is not a good way to look at things. But you are allowed your opinion as am I, though a mere scummy civy.

Thanks from Rich D

I'm sure it's probably nothing new, but was stolen valor as rampant, say, back in the 60's? I wouldn't think so, but I wasn't around then. From what I'm told, it wasn't a particularly popular time to be in the military (as viewed by some). I think many folks are simply trying to cash-in on the post-911 "thanks for your service."

Brave men died in jungles and frozen wastelands holding M14s, Garands and M16s. Isn't it a bit out of the same respect to those soldiers that we shoot those weapons.

It seems to me a boonie hat, field jacket or bit of cammo is the same thing.

In making this comment I'm not talking about posers. That's a whole different and dispicable issue.

Well this subject does reflect a lots of different interpretations of when a line is crossed.
Personally from what's been stated I'm mostly in line with what Douglas posted earlier.
In general I don't infer anything with what hat, coat or pair of boots someone chooses to wear. Still when it comes to "Stolen Valor", I have a visceral reaction when I feel that it's occurred.
Honestly I don't think I can define it that well. Just saying I know what it feels like to me.

I can't see getting worked up over a jacket, boots, shirt etc. that is worn without any insignia. I'd hate to see the Army-Navy surplus stores go out of business.

But for these stolen valor types I think the "bling" needs to be removed along with one piece of bling they were born with.

Dang, agreeing with a Marine...
The book was much better than the movie BTW

Wearing military uniform items doesn't bother me unless it is something outrageous, like a hipster poser.
I don't wear mine, ever, so at least someone is LOL.

Please read what I have written in a light of today. It was common in boot camp to learn about scummy civilians and your girl suzy rotten crotch and a lot of other things that needed to be unlearned.
I thought Starship Troopers had a novel idea, not that I would even entertain the thought in the real world. The right to vote and being a citizen is something that should not be taken lightly by anyone.
Leave the negativity in the gutter where it belongs. Many are proud of the service they have given our country. Leave it at that. Be proud of who you are whether you served or not. That is what I believe. We all have choices. In my business for the last 50 years if we were going to take on new people, vets that served honorably always moved to he head of the line.
I hope this discussion continues on the forum for a long time.
After Jan 20th, I think folks will all feel more free to speak and dump the PC that has hobbled us all.
Can't wait for a few ethnic jokes to come back into the public domain too.

Of coarse. Just working on a discussion that could be interesting.
Please try not to interpret the negative into my posts.
You know should of , would have , could have.
We are not talking in absolutes by any stretch.
Funny how the liberals show their true colors by getting their panties in a bunch.
