Communications is a ground side term. In the air wing the pilots or flight engineer take care of the Communications and the comm gear is taken care of by avionics technicians not "comm."
The designated marksman, pilot and comm, not avionics, are the things that make me suspect.
I was an avionics tech and cross trained into an air crew MOS.
Crashing 3 choppers is questionable also. Corps hasn't had that many shot down since Vietnam so it is very unusual to "crash." now HARD LAND is another issue all together.
We hard landed quite a few birds where we spread the skids right off the aircraft and cracked the tailbooms off. We also took rounds to where the A/C was damaged and they were coming out of the air in a semi controlled fashion. But none of these are crashes technically.
