Watco Teak Oil

Be careful using this stuff with bare hands. I got too used to tung oil being fine on my hands but the Watco teak has Mineral Spirits in it that are irritants.

Does Star Brite teak oil irritate hands or is that one ok? I can use a rag to rub in the watco but will it give the same finish as hand rubbed with bare hands?

I use Watco and true oil before I'm done it's all over me , I think of it as a protective coating
After watching my uncle Bill swell up with some form of chemical induced elephantiasis
I use those latex gloves for almost everything anymore
You will love this one , I was using paint stripper cleaning a M14 stock for finishing and had some rags with stripper residual on them that didn't get trashed

A month later I needed a rag to wipe my forehead , guess which rag got used
Within 20-30 minutes I was in the shower shrieking like a 5 year old

Lots of cold water helped my hands but it's no fun! I'm not sure why I have to take "hand rubbed" so literally but I'll be using a rag from now on!

The tung oil mix I got from treelinem14.com has given me no issues with irritation and also smells nice with the orange oil. I would get some Star Brite teak if it would be safer because I like using my hands. I'm sure the rag will work just fine, though

I like Watco Teak Oil and have finished all my M14 stocks with it. I always apply with a clean cloth of shop towel and my stocks are second to none.

Really if I can refinish a stock just about anyone can, no rocket science at all. Just remember, what you sand off can never be put back, so be careful. Teak oil finish is very forgiving and can be redone until you get it right.

I'm liking the Watco so far (other than the strong fumes and me being a moron thinking bare hands was ok for application). Does it darken up or should I think about a stain? The yellow from the birch is really coming through strong. I believe I read that alcohol based stains can be applied AFTER I have already started rubbing in oil.

I never did anything to my stocks except clean them, so I never stained them. Just clean with mean green and acetone, very light sanding with Watco and then rub down with the teak oil. If it gets too shiny just hit it with steel wool(0000) and wipe down.

It really is that easy. I don't believe Watco will darken.

Your rifles have looked amazing and if they didn't require stain then I think I will also be fine without it!
