M14 stock with M1 buttplate

This is a discussion on M14 stock with M1 buttplate within the Stock forums, part of the Rifle Forum category; How common are M14 stocks with the M1 buttplate? Also wanted to know if both wood and synthetic stocks were made in this configuration? Thanks...

If it's a USGI wood stock with the full auto cut-out and no cut-out in the rear comb area for a hinged butt plate then that would be an early T44E4 stock which was used in the T44E4 program that ultimately became the M14 we know today. These stocks were used for the T44E4 rifles and also on some of the early production M14 rifles until they were all used up and the final design M14 stocks were produced with the cut-out for the hinged butt Plate.

Only wood stocks were produced in this configuration - USGI Fiberglass stocks were not produced until December 1965.

Some aftermarket stocks may have been made or folks may have modified stocks to accept the M1 Garland butt plate but the T44E4 stock was only produced in wood.

I consider the original T44E4 stocks as one of the rare M14 items!

Here is a pic of my T44E4 stock.

The M1 butt plate will fit the regular M14 stock. But it leaves the hinge cutout open.

Springfield Armory (the government one) made a rubber filler piece to fill that, but they are are as heck to find.
