Second coat is finished. Looking like 4-5 coats and it will be done. To keep from boring everyone, ill upload 2nd coat and final coat along with assembly pictures and finished project.

Looking for input on the stock springfield handguard. Go with the stock light brown, or paint it black with flat high temp to contrast the light walnut?

Wow - a work of art, fer sure! Good for you!

I hate to ask - is that finish going to stand up against spilt barrel cleaners?

Thanks from 2AParamedic

Probably not well, but thankfully french polish is very easy to repair. Any blemishes can be wet sanded out and repolished as long as you have the same weight cut to fill it.

4th and final coat of shellac applied. Also filled the liner with shellac using a brush to protect it. Should be dry by this evening for the metal to be put in place. I will take pictures of the completed rifle tonight.

Used some spare dowels to hold it upright

Looking forward seeing the final product. I researched French polishing a year or so ago but to date have not attempted a project. Please keep posting the photos..

Thanks guys, looks like it's gunna be one more day at the least. Like the blithering idiot I am, I managed to scratch the finish around the stock liner screw when trying to align it properly. It was not easy getting those screws in... Anyways, I had to sand a small area down and start over on it. Already one coat in on it. Rifle should be together tomorrow night with pictures to follow. Thanks everyone for the comments and feedback!

If I were you I would be contacting Boyds or Fulton to get a matching walnut handguard.

Thanks from Hamstrosity

I toyed with the idea of a walnut hand guard! That or a black vented.
