Headed to Fred's today, any suggestions?

I'm new to the M1a, and have been on the forum for a few months now, but I realized what a cool place is just an hour away. I bought an M1 garand earlier this year and really enjoyed refinishing that stock, so I figured I needed to take the opportunity to get a few m14 stocks for the future.

I know I like the DOD stamp and I also like the big reds I've seen. Any suggestions on what else? How about percentage of tiger striping?

Thanks
James

THIS ^^^^^^, bring as much money as you can and pick up any and all nice ones you can afford. Then maybe offer some up here in the PX to recupe your expenses.
Oh, and PS, you may want to search for some of the threads here regarding how to ID stock manufacturers so you know what you're looking at when at Freds.

Remind him to complete initial processing of my order and send my confirmation? JK I'm guessing it will be a mad house. Good luck.

Well I may be SOL. I called earlier this week to ask if I could come down and check out the place, and he said sure, come on down. Just call to let me know you are coming. I said sure, it will prob be Thursday.

I've been calling all day but the mailbox is full and his phone appears to be off. I drove down anyway (at my own risk) since I took half the day off work, but there isn't anyone here. I'll hang out for a bit longer, then prob head home. I probably picked the one day he had an appointment or something.

If anyone has his cell number, please PM me.

The address I went to was 1212 Greensboro rd silver city, nc. Obviously this is his old address. I have not been able to get in touch with him today to get his new address. Total bust, major bummer. If anyone has the new address please PM me.

Alright, so the short story is that I never figured out where the place was. Day was a big waste and it was probably due to my lack of planning.

Here is the long story. First of all, I feel like a complete moron for several reasons that I will explain as I paint the timeline. Over the past 2 months I have been reading about the M1A trying to determine what style I like and what configuration I would like to have. In that time I had seen references to Fred's on several threads and went to his website to check it out. I thought it was cool, figured I would buy some stuff once I figured out the configuration I was going to go with.

Fast forward to last week, I got in the forum and saw that Freds was selling their stock, and I knew that I needed to move forward on checking the place out and hopefully getting some stocks. The thread that brought attention to the fact that Freds was selling out was the first thread that I had seen where people were referencing Wade who refinishes stocks. I saw that there was someone who's user name was Doug Carlton who seemed like he was going to be headed down there. So I messaged him asking who Wade was. Yeah...I know... but wait, there's more.

For some reason, my phone doesn't let me run searches on forums. Not sure if it is a pop-up setting or what, so I google imaged "big red refinished stocks" and realized that Doug Carlton is wade. Seeing his work inspired me even more to make a trip down there to pick up a few stocks so I could attempt to refinish them.

So this past tuesday I called Freds and talked with Jack to make sure it was OK for me to come down. I told him I would be down sometime later this week, probably Thursday. He said that was fine, just call before you come down. I got off the phone and realized that I had forgotten to get his address. I thought about calling him back, but decided that I would just ask him when I called on Thursday. Again, using google, I searched and found a thread from 2014 where someone gave the address for his warehouse. Great! I got the address, now I just need to call on Thursday to let him know I was coming.

This morning I posted this thread in the M14 section and headed in to work. I took a half day vacation and left work at 12:15. I called Jack around 12:30 and the calls when straight to voice mail. I called several more times thinking he would turn his phone back on after lunch, but that never occurred. No problem, I know he is swamped, so Ill just show up and explain who I am, and hope he lets me in.

I hit the Wendy's and arrived at 2:00pm. I get to the old place and sat in the parking lot for about 15 minutes. Cell phone signal was very poor, so it took another 15 minutes to get logged into the forum where I noticed that my thread was moved to the sub forum called "stocks". Wow, what do you know...there is a stocks forum section. So I clicked on it and saw all the threads about Freds. By this time I was trying to figure out how I could get in touch with Jack. So I went down to one of the local gun stores to see if they knew him. Strike 1. Then I went to the business next to Jack's old place and they said they had no idea what I was talking about.

I sat for a bit longer, and thought, man...it is very strange that 1 day before his order deadline that he would be away from his shop. So I started thinking that maybe I was in the wrong place? So I got back on the newly discovered "stocks" forum and saw Wade's thread about his last trip there. How did I miss this section of the forum? In his thread he talked about the new warehouse. Boom...confirmation. I am in the wrong place. So I edited the post (above) and started heading to the house. I got 30 minutes up the road and received a PM from Chef on One. He was kind enough to send me the new address to Fred's warehouse. Well, my phone/GPS must have been wrong because after another half hour of driving back to where I had just left, I arrived at Captain Tom's Seafood restaurant. There was a warehouse beside Captain Tom's but there were no cars there so I figured I was in the wrong place. By then it was 4:30 so feeling defeated I headed towards the house. Talk about a big disappointment!

Moral of the story, winging it doesn't always work, and failing to plan is planning to fail.

Thanks from Dougboffl and MrM1A

jrblanke,

Your Participation Trophy is in the mail!

We have all had days like that. I can't tell how many trips I make to Home Depot in a weekend just to complete one small project.

Man, if I was close enough I would be there, spend the day and buy 100 of them. That would keep me busy for a couple of years

Well I was finally able to make it out to Freds this past weekend to pick up my order that I placed back in September. I had no idea what to expect when going down there, but man, what a great time. My only regret is discovering the M14/M1A too late. I would have loved to had more time to rummage through boxes or come back at a later date after learning more. I have a feeling that I am going to wish I had bought more. Not sure what I am going to do with them yet. I had planned to sell a few, but now that I have them, I think I am going to hold on to them for a while! They are all so unique.

I bought a total of 10 stocks. 7 Tiger striped (VG to E, 25% to 100% stripes), 1 Springfield (VG-E), 1 Vietnam SAW w/ E2 handguard & sling, and 1 grade II walnut for refinishing practice. It was so fun to pick through the stocks and imagine what they may look like refinished. Once I got home, I removed the butt plates and looked at all the makers. That was really fun too! Final count was 5 W-W, 2 Os, 2 S (under diamond), and 1 H.

I would say that the best part of the whole thing was eating Lunch with Jack. We talked for 45 min to an hour before heading back to the warehouse. By the end of the day he had gotten comfortable with me and was making jokes about being the #1 M14 proctologist. You arent a real M14 guy unless you check at least 50 butts a day.

I really enjoyed my time there, and Im thankful that I was able to place an order and have the experience of picking them out.

Thanks for the look,

James
