Has anyone done this? My M1A (loaded) came with new production walnut, which I'm sure is made by Boyds. The forend is a little chunky and it doesn't have the same lines as a USGI stock. Has anyone here sanded one down to GI profile? I know this is common with Boyds Garand stocks, but I haven't seen it done on M14/M1A stocks. Thanks!
Before you hack a good stock, think about it. That stock is more heavy for a reason, it is a light target stock. You have light target rifle. With your set up you are looking at 1.5/2.0 moa IYDYP.If you want a lighter stock,i.e.GI; then get a GI stock, many in the PX. It is OK to have two stocks for one rifle, Hey I am 5 ahead and I PM'd Dukem Nukem today. Please, Gentlemen, look up his threads and do what you can to help this nice guy out. He is a brother in need.
It is definitely trimmer than their M1A stock, especially in the belly, but it is not as trim as an original M14 stock.
If you look at the bottom of your wood M1A stock, check out the mag well. A USGI stock would be flush with the front end of the liner. That is a lot of wood to remove. RNGR2
If you want to sand it down I don't see why you couldn't it's just wood. Easier to buy a USGI stock though. If you figure 4-5 hours worth of sanding and staining to make it look OK and a day or two off and on to make it look nice that is a lot of time vs. buying a 75$ unfinished stock and then staining it.
Sanding one of those down is too much screwing around, just have M1Army or Doug Carlton hook you up with a sweet thinner profile legit USGI stock that they refinished, win-win. If you don't like your stock it's a great excuse to get one of those.

Get a real USGI stock from Fred's....with a vented GI handguard too
