It was suggested that I check out this forum and this section specifically regarding some questions I have on stock repair. I have a bunch of stocks that I am going through and many of the nice striped ones have some damage to them which is unfortunate. Can something like this be repaired or would it leave the stock to vulnerable?
Some nicely figured stocks and a few comments below - just my .02
Pic #2 - crack from the liner screw to the full-auto cut-out -> you see this crack a lot and in many cases [coming in from the top] you can get a brass pin or two in a crack like that and the repair will we stronger than the original. You will really not see the repair pins.
Brownells - makes a stock repair kit with brass pins for this exact repair. You just have to be careful with your pilot drill holes and make sure you do not come out on the finish side of the stock from not drilling straight. I am sure you can search the forum and get some other examples of fixing a stock using a brass pin repair kit. Just take your time and go slow. You basically drill a pilot hole, screw in the brass pin, cut off excess and file down smooth.
Pic #3 the broken butt stock i.e. chunk missing - that is a difficult fix and I don't really have a solution on that one. It is both cosmetic as it is a very visible section of your stock and the repair would need to be done correctly in terms of height and fit in order to accept the butt-plate properly when you reassemble. Really not a good way to patch that, but again some other member may have a fix!
Some others might have a creative idea, but cosmetically it will never match the rest of the stock which is too bad as that stock has some nice figuring.
+1 on what M1Army has to say, the crack by the selector is not a difficult fix, the chunk missing from the butt is about a write off. It can be fixed to be functional. They are nicely figured pieces of wood.
The stock that has the chunk of wood missing can be saved by splicing in a donor piece. Or by building up with JB weld that can be tinted with a dye that will get it close to matching.
There are several great threads on stock repair by candyman on this site and surplus rifle.
I have quite a few stocks that have good striping but are slightly damaged in this area. I would like to sell some of them since I am not in a position to repair them but maybe someone could fix them and sell them off for a profit? Do you think it is worth anything to someone?
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
