Hey all new to the forum and new to m14s/m1as what ever you prefer to call them anyway recently got a new to me (and unfired) springfield m1a nm. I love the rifle and everything about it only thing I'm wanting to change on it is the stock it came with the walnut and a promag archangel stock. I'm not sure if its the curves or what but personally i don't like the promag stock I'm used to bolt actions for my large caliber rifles and am wanting either a mcmiliam a5 rem. 700 style stock or just a normal m14 fde/coyote tan style stock. Which is your favorite and what doesn't entirely break the bank? I'm wanting rugged and reliable doesn't have to have a cheek rest but its a plus. Sorry if this sounds like a retard question I'm just entirely new to these rifles but LOVE it!
The only thing better than the bedded walnut stock is a bedded Mcmillan stock but you will spend big money on it. There are a couple different variations from a basic rifle-style to one that has more of a bench style vertical grip with an adj cheek riser and finally there is one with a pistol grip. Mcmillan will run you anywhere from 250-700 depending on used/new/options plus another 200 to have it bedded.
I know for certain the rifle is a nm it has it stamped all over it. This is a complete newbie question but how do i know for certain the walnut stock is glass embedded?
You should see bedding compound around the receiver edges and the trigger assembly feet. If you look in the magazine well, the metal liner will have bedding compound all around it. There will be "bridge" of compound around the back end of the guide rod (the magazine hook).
The Loaded model also has NM stamped all over it but the stock is not bedded. This is why folks are asking you to pull the trigger group to see if you can see any bedding. It's a common & understandable mistake made by those new to the platform.
NM rifles are different from Loaded models in the following ways.
1. Stock is bedded.
2. Rear sight has hooded peep sight to give you 1/2 minute elevation adjustments
3. the Gas system is unitized.
4. NM spring guide is installed.
NM & Loaded rifles are the same in the following ways.
1. NM marked medium weight barrel
2. NM marked front sight
3. 4.5 to 5 lb trigger NM tuned trigger
Well guys glad you have alot of knowledge because after reading everything and looking over my rifle i found that its not a nm its a loaded m1a... good thing i got it cheap then huh? Thanks for all the help!
delong31 That's exactly what i want! Web searches aren't being very helpful where can i buy one? I'm going to look up other forums on this stock for sure. Does the cheek rest come with it or is that a separate thing?
