I am aware of three early generations or versions of the standard McMillan M14 stock - the very early ones that still had the indents were a liner screw would be on a wood stock. I've seen them black or camo with the camo being a "smear / swirl" pattern. Next a shorter grip and then a longer grip. Can anybody put up a picture showing the difference between the second and third versions? When was the change made? Which would be correct for a late 1980's stock? Thanks!
I don't know when my stock was made. The gun had a Heavy Douglas from '92 and I believe it was put in this stock then but ??? The camo pattern is a little different with the gray in and if someone could tell me what it was called I would appreciate it. Not sure this is any help to you or not?
Well it could have had the stock added at anytime after it was built they've never been cheap, as for the pattern there are 3 popular types for the M1A, Forest, Woodland and GAP. The picture is a little dark and hard too see well I think we can rule out GAP, Woodland has thinner/smaller color blotches. So Forest looks like a safe bet too me.
You could always pick your pattern, and the number of colors used was always up too the buyer.
That stock appears to have liner screws. Does it actually have a steel stock liner? Also, where is the selector cutout? Was it filled post-USMC service? If so, it's darn near invisible.
I also have one of those early pre 1987 McMillan stocks. They have faux indents where liner screws would be on a wood stock but there is no liner or screw hole. After 1987 they eliminated that and lengthened the pistol grip area of the stock, which is what I was looking at. Mine is black and has the selector cut out, which I imagine was filled in on Bamban's stock.
When I started this thread I was thinking there were three versions and that they eliminated the indents in one update then lengthened the pistol grip area in another but now it seems that there was one update in 1987 where they made both changes at once...
Here are some more McMillan stocks, I really do not know how to tell what revision or version of the stocks I have, never bothered to find out since I am not a collector, I am just a trigger monkey.
The first one I posted is heavier than any of them, the clean desert camo with no stick um and no blue tape comes 2nd in stand alone weight.
Did not bother with the rifle details since we are talking stocks.
I stand corrected. I never realized the screws were still in there. Mine is filled over and I never examined that part of it. I'm travelling right now and so don't have the stock at hand to check it out but Bamban's pictures are very clear!
Okay Bamban your pictures have caused me to reevaluate - what I am looking at is the shape of the pistol grip and butt stock. The early ones with the liner screw have a shorter pistol grip and different angle back to the butt. The newer ones have the longer pistol grip and stand higher on the table. I am trying to see if there are two or three versions and from your picture now I am thinking three again. From the pictures of your stocks on the scales the top two seem to have the shorter grip and lower profile but only the top one has the liner screws, correct? So it looks like three versions: top stock short grip with liner screws, second stock short grip without liner screws and then the rest all longer grip? Or am I missing something? You don't know the date of the second stock do you?
Thanks!
There is only one with liner screws, vintage and rev/revision and year manufacture, I have no idea. Never got into that detailed information in these, I am just a trigger monkey, not a collector.
I can take more pictures of specific details if you want. Just let me know.
Bamban, you see the difference in the grip area between the early stock with the liner screw and the others? Are all the others different from that one or is one (the second one shown, weighing 4.12 lbs) the same profile grip / butt stock as the one with the liner screws? Thanks, I appreciate your time!
Thanks! The first two pics in your last post seem to show pretty clearly the difference around the grip. So that one pictured without the liner screw is pretty much the same profile as the other three? Seems to be two versions then, not three... I appreciate your taking the time to post those pictures!
Bamban, thanks for taking the time to post the pictures as they are most appreciated. I know your sole interest is shooting these fine rifles. There are a few of us who want to have a better understanding of the history of the M14.
Thanks for helping us do that! RenGI2
