Hi Everyone,

A forum member contacted me and wanted me to repair and refinish his walnut stock. He found the stock in an abandon warehouse that a recycler had and said it had nice figuring but did have a crack up in the front of the stock. I asked him to send some pictures and agreed that I would give the repair and refinish a try for him. I could see the stock was amazing from the initial pictures and when it arrived I got really excited.

The crack in the front looked like a barreled receiver was twisted out of the stock! The front ferrule was bent out of spec but the “half-moon” crimp on the front ferrule was holding the crack and wood together. I was able to use small pair of channel locks on the ferrule and slowly bend the ferrule back to its original place. I made very small adjustments and checked my position comparing to a new in spec front ferrule. Once I got the ferrule back in spec the back side of the crack sealed up and I made a “form out of cut-up playing cards” and slid one piece between the stock and front ferrule and another piece along the "top straight edge of the stock" so I could fill the crack and not lose any of the JB weld/Epoxy. I filled the deep part of the crack and mixed walnut sawdust with the epoxy near the top so it sanded better. The patch came out very strong, but I was not able to get a repair pin in that area as I did not have much wood to work with — but the repair is solid!

After stripping the stock I found one more hairline crack at the bolt stop which is not that unusual. I was able to get a brass repair pin in that crack and it closed the hairline crack perfectly.

I was happy this forum member allowed me to Repair & Refinish this stock so it can be placed back in service. I have to say I was sad to see this one leave my shop!

A few before shots:

Original Crack in Stock —> It appeared like the barreled receiver was twisted out of the stock bending the stock ferrule out of spec on the “cracked side.”

Rear section of the stock with some typical dents and dings

Excellent DAS Stamp — but some dents and dings to remove

Nice Proof P — with a few small dings and chips

Side view with the typical dents and dings from storage - notice the sawdust in the liner screw hole from a prior refinish or accumulated dirt/grime.

Stripped stock with the crack repaired - it came out solid and sanded well!

Hairline Crack at the Bolt Stop

The stripped stock after the Hairline Crack repair — it came out solid and nice and smooth!

View of the stripped stock after completing the tactical sanding. All the edges are nice and crisp — you never want to change the classic lines of the stock!

The Finished Stock ready for service:

You can see the patch basically matched the dark figuring - I stained the patch to match as good as possible. You really do not notice the patch as just matches the figuring!
