I ordered a plain jane Birch stock and mild tiger striping from Fred's and got it the other day (3weeks) i also ordered a slotted handguard to go with it.
This is how i got it the BLO finish was very dark from age.

I cleaned it with Denatured alcohol and cotton balls

Applied the first coat (heavy per the instructions) and let sit for thirty minutes.

Then i did a steel wool (fine) scrub second coat and wiped excess off after 15 minutes and let dry over night.

And assembled!

I am very pleased on how the stock came out plus the great condition the stock is in, the only thing that i will do differently next time is use a synthetic OOOO steel wool when doing a scrub coat.

Nice stock it came out great.

You mentioned using steel wool in the future. I had more success in using a cotton "pad" with the French polish technique. I also found it helpful to leave on the teak slurry (after wet sanding) overnight to really let it soak in. I found this video helpful with the French polish. If you look up his earlier videos he shows how to make the cotton pad.

Naked force has resolved more issues throughout history than any other factor. The contrary opinion, that violence never solves anything, is wishful thinking at its worst. People who forget that always pay.-Lt. Jean Rasczak

I like the quote you have in your post, it reminds me of a hat worn by a friend many years ago donning the words "Violence solves everything", and being a realist the rational behind that statement made good sense to me.
