Wood Handguard on a Krieger Heavy Pattern Barrel **What Finish to Use**

Can it be done? I know there will be some serious woodworking but will there be enough wood left? Putting on a SAI M21 walnut stock.

I recieved my handguard and want to match it to the SAI original finish. Anyone know how SAI finishes their stocks?

I don't remember what kind of barrel was on his rifle, maybe a Krieger, but 82nd Airborne has a photo thread here somewhere showing how he did it with a Boyd's handguard. He hogged out a lot of wood to get it to clear.

It would be mighty thin at the op rod guide if it worked at all. It also would retain the heat of the barrel a lot longer after it gets heated up. These heavy barrel don't exactly cool off fast once they are. Especially while in the hot summer heat.

How does your M21 group? I wrote a friend about my day on the range with my M21 and I believe in 3 paragraphs I used the words "I love my rifle" 5 or 6 times. lol

It's doable. I did it to one a couple of years ago. The handguard was part of a boyds type II stock. I didn't really like the width of that stock and sold it. One thing to watch out for is the right read corner is not relieved for the op rod so you will need to do a little work there as well.

Thanks Guys

My M21 groups great, 100 yard 6 shot group. I took a long range shooting 3 day class and shot it out to 1200 yards. This group won this part of the class. Beat out all the bolt guns.

20 round mag

I love my M21 although I may be removing it from the stock and dropping it into a Mcmillan M1A stock as a second Match rifle. I have not had mine scoped for a year and a half. My long barrel -15 stole the scope. I dont know if you guys remember my bolt problem I had with my 21. It was soft and mushrooming where it rhode over the bolt. I sent it back to SAI and they swapped the bolt out. There was some deep pitting on the top side of the Krieger CM heavy barrel. They swapped that out as well. Aside from the 700 rounds on the receiver the thing has not been shot yet. I cant see scoping it again considering I need three scopes for M25's I have since twisted up. So hence the Mcmillan M1A stock. I would at least get some use out of it as a comp rifle. Shot like yours! Groups were tight hot or cold. Love that M21. The stock is perfect for a scoped rifle. Had I not discovered the Mcmillan M3A adj when SAI came out with the M25 I would have probably tried to get a couple more of the M21 stocks but at that time they were not available. It sure is a solid rifle, One of these day we need to have an M21 shoot off, LOL SAI M21's only and see what happens.

Pretty sure they just oil the walnut. My boyds stock was walnut unfinished when I got it and all I did was oil it and it looks the same as my M21 stock. You can call and see if they will tell you

PS if it doesn't work out you can always use simple green or oxi clean to remove the oil and stain to your liking
