Well,Could be a older oil or maybe just a BLO finish....regardless,I have finished dozens of stocks the same way with very good results. I use Citristrip to strip the finish off, useing oooo steel wool to remove the gunk.I then use Acetone and 0000 wool to clean of any remaing residule. Now if there appears to be dark oil/stain left I use a still nylon brush and soft scrub with bleach in it(bathroom stuff) and scrub it good with hot water. The little bit of bleach in it will cut the oil grease ect and will also help lighten the wood a bit.rinse well and let dry unless there are dents that need steamed out.If so,get your iron and steam them out while things are wet.
After drying, buff with more 0000 wool, use alot of pressure untill the wood shines..wipe down with denatured acohol or mineral spirits..time for stain..I like Chestnut ridge military..it is a achohol based stain. When dry buff again with the wool..wipe down again to clean.I use pure tung oil,1 coat, buff when dry, repeat 3-6 times....I know you will be pleased...Glock
