Garand Question: 30-06 vs. 308 Clips

Learned Forum Members,

If I got an M-1 Garand in .308, would it use the same 8-round en-bloc clips that the standard (.30-06) Garand uses ??

Are there any other differences besides the chamber ?

Thanks in advance.

The Enbloc Clip will work just fine for both 30-06 and .308.

I have a converted M1 Garand and all is well other than a gap at the front of the mag well.

Not needed but much advised would be to install a spacer at the front of the Mag well so 30-06 can't be loaded.

A Garand in .308 is great to shoot and easy to control...Then again I never shot one in 30-06 either.

I don't own one but remember when they came out American Rifleman had an article on them. I believe there was either a special clip or a plastic insert in the clip. I'm sure someone here has one and will correct me if I'm wrong. I think it was an insert for the regular 30 06 clip. Karsten beat me to the draw :D .

Same clip. The thing that Jack Orr is talking about (I think ) is a small plastic device that keeps you from trying to load a 30/06 round into the rifle after the 7.62 barrel has been installed.

Bighead is correct. There is reference to the device in some older US Navy manuals. It is a blocking device to prevent 30.06 from being loaded into the magazine.

You shouldn't need it... Just in case you have a '06 Garand too, don't load your .308 into it on the range! 8)

The filler block goes in the M1 bullet guide and presents a loading platform for the shorter cartridge as well as prevents the loading of much longer .30-06 into the magazine. This is the Smith Enterprise version which works very well.

Since the Rule of Twos requires you have both .30 and 7.62mm Garands get the filler block just to prevent embarrassment at the range.
