Post 5.7mm Johnson

Mine is being converted as we speak. Do you need a chambering reamer and gages?

Thank you for the reply. I need info mostly, trying to figure out if this conversion is worthwhile and cost effective. I mostly predator hunt and thought a semi-auto .22 Hornet type cartridge gun would be fun.
However, I have come to realize one may only shoot accurately as far as one can see, so the carbine would need to be scoped. The carbine would have to be capable of MOA to make it useful. Form dies and reloading dies would be costly, and your hard work put into making the brass would be lost when firing in the woods.
Any input you have would be appreciated.

Post Scope mounts for 5.7mm Johnson

I've tried all sorts of scope mounts with varying success. Those no-gunsmithing, single-screw dovetail mounts squirm like a wounded toad. A foreign-made aluminum mount broke the dovetail nut when I started to torque it up. The dovetail crumbled like a cookie. A steel US-made one was almost as heavy as the scope I was installing and would not center the scope within its range of adjustment. My 5.7 will have a conventional Redfield mount which engages the dovetail and requires drilling and tapping one hole.

One mount that is working out nicely is the Fulton Armory scout scope mount that replaces the handguard. http://www.fulton-armory.com/MCarbParts.htm It doesnít block the iron sights. Of course you are restricted to intermediate-eye-relief scopes which are usually of low power. Iíve not tried the imported 2x7 power scout-type scopes that eBay for $60 or so. Iím afraid theyíre pistol scopes with armís-length eye relief that would make them useless on a Carbine. Has anyone tried one?

I have noticed that type of mount and wondered how stable it was. I shot my carbine today, unfortunately the range was windy and the sun was blocked by the trees and hills, so the range was also freezing cold. I shot 25 yards sitting, and averaged baseball size groups. I think the carbine is capable of better groups. A fellow shooting next to me told me of a 5.7 Spitfire he had seen in a north Georgia gunshop, I will go Wednesday and look into it.

I had a bag of reloads that wouldn't shoot worth a flip, I rapid fired them just to have the brass empty for reloading. The carbine ran like a Singer sewing machine, I was impressed.
