OP, the reference to your barrel carton's number is about 85% down the link that MD66948 provided, it might be in more then one place in the link. What's the number on the side of your barrel and is it NM marked anywhere?

Got pics?

If been a looking and so far he is being very allusive.
0 deg out this morning so it's kind of nice to have a little extra insulation. At least that is my excuse.

Thanks.
1005-447-9904 --- Federal Stock Number (FSN), 1005 designates a weapon (or component) up to 30mm
Barrel --- Nomenclature (obvious)
1 EA R4-A-4-64 --- Quantity in package (obvious). The R4-A-4-64 is a lot number, usually can be decoded as who made it and in what month and year.

By the late 1950's, M1 replacement barrels were packed in a black color fiber tube and that practice was continued with M14 replacement barrels. Your barrel is a repacked barrel, likely done at an Army Depot. That is confirmed for me as there is no contract number in the package markings. I've heard that some view the letter "R" as indicating Red River Army Depot, but as far as I know that is only speculation. Your barrel could be dated anytime prior to 1964.

Thanks. Does FSN indicate it is a NM barrel (though of uncertain date)?
