question about 308 Garand malfunction

A friend of mine has a 308 M1 Garand that he bought from Cabela's last month. We shot it today, and the rifle would fire fine, but about every couple of rounds, the clip would halfway eject with rounds still in it, and the bolt would stay at the rear blocked by the clip and remaining rounds. We would push the clip and rounds back in, and it would fire normally, and then start to eject again, stopping the weapon again. It did that with almost every clip.

I figured it was a worn latch or spring inside the receiver. Any ideas from those more knowledgeable than myself about what causes this malfunction?

Yes, could be worn parts, or might be bad clips.
The usual first thing to try is some other clips.

I'm sure someone will comment about how to identify the 'good ones' and the 'troublesome ones' ...

Try different clips, if the problem persists replace the clip latch spring w/a new one, Tony at Orion 7 has them, your buddy should grab one of Tony's op rod springs while he's ordering parts, his op rod springs are IMO the best new production M1 op rod springs on the market currently, I've been using his springs for over 10 years now, they're made right.

Hope that helps,

Examine the notch at the base of the clip. It should have a sharp well defined edge.

Similarly, the engagement nose of clip latch, it, too, should have well defined corners.

Dont randonly start replacing parts. As already suggested check they enblocs you are usingDiscard any that are not USGI . What is stamped on them?
If you have a micrometer you need to measure the lobe of the bullet guide it may be out of spec
If the bullet guide and the enblocs check out OK remoive the clip latchspring and slightly stetch it, reinstall and fire rifle. If problem goes away replace spring.
In all the years of building, collecting, shooting Garands I have never run across a worn clip latch. I am sure ist possible , just never found one yet

I had the same issue with a standard M1 Garand. New clip latch spring cured it. Not 1 issue since.

Thanks for the responses. He ordered a new clip latch spring today, so he'll try that out when he gets it. As far as clips, he tried several different kinds, although I don't have the markings on them.

I'll advise him to stretch the existing spring and try that first though before he starts replacing parts.

He already ordered the spring, may as well install it. You still need to look at the other items I mentioned if issue still exists after new spring

I have never seen a worn or damaged latch either, but you never know these days. The days of plentiful spares is coming to a close, if it isn't here already. You just don't know these days.
