Unertl "USMC" 10x scopes have been auctioned off on CMP for about 2 years now. They average around $3500-5000 in price. According to my research: there were 527.

Were the scopes sold with mounts, or without?

CMP Auction sold at least one, maybe just one, with enough documentation to authenticate it.

You might get the answer to your question by calling USO (US Optics). They did the refreshing and had a few group buy runs on them.

Art,

A more important and related question is, how many M40a1s were built by the Marines at Quantico and officially released to the public with all the documentation. And the rifle complete as issued to a Scout/Sniper. My guess, not very many. I am sure there were A1s built at Quantico for some civilians but not officially documented and sanctioned.

You have a one of a kind, Art.

Gentlemen, Here's the URL for the M40 that was auctioned by the CMP http://auction.odcmp.com/auctions/detail.asp?id=2384
There may have been more that were auctioned but I did not see any others.

I have also heard that the Marine Corps has on occasion released a small number of M40's and M40A1's from San Diego and Lejune.

With proper documentation these are defintely pricey rifles.

Rick

The documents Art has with the rifle includes pictures during the build cycle and the rifle book was signed by Chuck Mawhinney himself.

The rifle was built at the RTE/PWS with most of the components donated by Marines, McMillan, and US Optics. It was auctioned off on Sniper's Hide in '09 with the entire proceed donated to one of their own, a wounded Marine Scout/Sniper, for his physical recovery.

Here is what I was able to archive from SH and a couple of shots when I had it.

The group was shot by Art when I loaned it to him shoot sometime ago. 10 shots. I think after seeing what the rifle can do, he decided to buy it afterwards.

Here are some old ones that I took when I took possession of the rifle. The group was shot, after zeroing with the shots outside X I fired those cluster in the middle, 200 yards on the mat with sling. It is a shooter. These were the only shots I fired with the rifle.
