Y'all are making me consider hunting down my old Mini14 and trading the AR15 I built for it

Here was my baby as it looked the day I gave it away

The Mini14 was my go to rifle before I bought the SOCOM 16. CDNN mags are great, and you can also get good stuff from GreatWestGunsmithing (trigger jobs, barrel cuts).

Now off to Facebook to find the guy I sold my Mini to...

I expect about a 1.5 moa with decent 62g ammo from the mini 14 with the upgrades. I also did a little work on the gas block and made it even on both sides. I noticed the rifle shot 62g a bit better than 55g. I may get some quality 62g match ammo just to see what happends. I am looking for a walnut stock for this thing but only find ones that are "shiny" I want one that is bland like the standard walnut on my m1a match. Maybe I could get one of the shiny ones and sand it down and apply lendseed oil like springfield does. Then I want to get an m1a handguard and cut it down to fit the mini like a few others have done. After that I will mill out a butt plate that works like the M1A buttplate. Then finally I will parkerize the rifle and magazines. And at that point I will be a happy camper. Im also currently looking for a good priced M1A Standard or M1A scout for a non DMR setup. Just plain iron sights.

I didn't experiment enough with different ammo while I had mine. It was an odd rifle that fired steel case rounds without fail, but brass rounds always caused issues.

Keep us posted on how it shoots. Mine was also a 580 series Ranch rifle. If you're going for M1A looks, you may also want to look into an Accu-Strut... supposedly helps the accuracy but definitely gives it more of an M14 look. http://www.accu-strut.com

Just an update, I am about 50% done with the parkerizing. Magazines, trigger group stock inserts are done came out a very dark color close to Springfield M1A parkerizing. The barrel, flash hider, and receiver are next and will be done Wednesday. However the mag well and bolt are blued stainless......so ordered some cerakote to match M1A bolt. should be done by next weekend hopefully.

If you guys want I'll post up some after pictures. Also a walnut stock is on the way so if any people are interested I might be selling the stock on it currently.

What's funny is I live in CA where minis are deemed safe for our use and ARs are verboten yet everyone here wants the CA legal AR and hates the mini. Meanwhile you're in FL where you can have whatever you want gun-wise and you're sexing up a mini.

For the record I still have my mini, as well as my pre-ban mags. It's a 3-5MOA bullet hose but it is MY bullet hose...

I'm thinking about a mini-14 purchase myself. Would anyone recommend the newer vs the older rifles? From what I can tell, the newer rifles are more accurate, but the older are made better? Or maybe more?

Newer probably more accurate. Made better? Dunno about that. The older ones receivers were FINISHED better. But that doesn't really mean anything.

My older ranch rifle was VERY inaccurate until I installed an Accu-strut. That helped it a lot. Now I can hit torso plates at 200+ offhand with ease. That's the limit of my testing.

If you want a plinker I would get an old mini 14 and accustrut it if you can get the mini14 for $300 or so. But after the accustrut you are spending close to $400 for a used mini14. When you can get a new mini for $700 that is brand new and shoots as well as the old mini with the accustrut. Then spend a little extra on the new mini for an accustrut and now its even better. I notice no difference with 580 series vs 180 series in terms of fit and finish. 580 has a thick modern like barrel. 180's will generally be cheaper.

So if you dont want to spend much, get the used 180 or maybe a 580 with accustrut.
If you want more accuracy and it to be new get the new 580 series.
If you want even more accuracy and spend more money get the accustrut for the 580
Then shim the gas, bed it, and use match grade ammo if you want to impress people.

Personally I went the 580 series with accustrut and am damn determined to get it to look as much like an M1a as possible. As long as it can tag a 6 foot by 2 foot target at a maximum range of 500 meters with decent ammo, then im happy. Other than that im after aesthetics not accuracy. I have a tack driver I dont need another unless its a 50bmg, 416 barret, 338 lapua, 300winmag, or 7mm mag.

Thanks from Deacon

Welcome from the FREE STATE OF IDAHO!
I got my first mini in 1981, she is still going strong. My experience with after market mags is that you will go through several before finding one that is reliable. That said I have not used the CDNN mags mentioned above.
The mini-14 GB was my old agencies primary weapon (Long Gun) and as a range master I have shot countless thousands of rounds through them. They are a solid rifle!
Again, welcome to the forum.

Thanks from Killashrub
