Thinking about selling my AR and getting a Mini-G

I'm a steel and wood guy at heart, but I thought I needed a tactical carbine for home defense / zombies.. I'm not big on the 5.56 as a man stopper, and am thinking about getting a Mini-G tanker Garand done in 308 to keep the same ammo as my M-14 and 308 Garand, while still filling the defense carbine role...

Opinions?

Of course I'd have to remove the AR from my avatar and replace it with an M14....

While I have never shot a Shuffs Mini-G, I have only heard good things about his work.

I am a BIG fan of a Tanker sized M1 Garand, 308 or 30/06.

However I think everybody should have an AR 15.

Also I prefer an AR 15 for a house gun, as its penetration through building material is a lot less with proper loads, like the 50 or 55gr Ballsitic Tips.
I recommend Federal factory loads or Winchester's Ballsitic Silvertips.

I have done a lot of tests with these loads and several others for work and the Ballistic Tips did best, and gave us great performance in actual shootings.

They were not out a the time but I have heard good reports on the Hornady TAP loads as well.

If you want more penetration, there are loads for that as well, such as Federal's Tactical load with the Trophy Bonded Bearclaw, or loads with Barnes X bullets.

Also, it is just much easier for anyone to shot the AR 15, they hold a lot of rounds and they are easy to attach lights to.

They are easy to handle and/or shoot with one hand, if it becomes necessary...

I'm in suburbia, Over penetration is my concern with the AR as well. I have a 1911 and an 870, which I think would be better for home invasions than either the Mini-G or Ar-15. I guess my main reason for having the Ar-15 is for any SHTF / Zombie Apocalypse scenario.. DI5 I think the Mini-G / M14 would be just fine in this scenario...

In the end, it's what makes you happy. I look at the 5.56 the same way as you, but decided it wouldn't be a terrible option if I, God forbid, ever needed to arm someone that wasn't used to shooting. Light weight and no recoil should prove helpful if the need arises. Just a though.

I have done a lot of penetration tests in real houses and built walls for certain tests.

Most of you would be surprised about the pnetration of some 223 ammo, in a house.

Most all handgun ammo 9mm and up will penetrate through more house walls than will 50 and 55 gr Ballistic Tip bullets form a 223.

I used a 223 for an entry gun for 23 years.

Believe me many people believe that because it is a "rifle" it will overpenetrate.

With the right ammo, that is just not so.

Also the 223 is far less likely to shoot through a persons chest, than most handgun rounds.

Sporting 223 ammo is very effective on chest shots.

The only negative to using a 223 for an entry gun is that it will shoot through all the Kevlar you can wear, and still walk around, with any dexterity.

While I would always want to be wearing a handgun as well, IF I was Buck Naked and had to pick up only one gun for home defense, it would be an AR 15, with the proper ammo of course.

IF I was to use a 308 for an indoor rifle I would use one of the 110 to 125gr bulleted factory loads. Assuming of course they ran my rifle 100%.

I would put the first 10 rounds in the magazine the light bulleted loads, and the next 10 would be my regular personal protection load with a 150 or 165/165 expanding bullet.

The thought being that after 10 rounds or so, everybody still left alive will be hiding behind something...

I would zero the sights for the rifle with my standard "outdoor" ammo.

Then usually the lighter bulleted ammo will hit lower, so you could up your sights for an "indoor" zero, or just do like any AR shooter does, due to the high sight line, vs the barrel line, is hold higher indoors.

You should be aware of your EXACT point of impact indoors, just in case a bad guy is holding a family member as a shield/hostage.

My professional choice always was, and now that I am retired, my personal choice is I will always shoot in such a situation, I will NEVER give my gun up.

You give your gun up, everybody will die. I will always choose to shoot...

FRG1FRG1to get the thread back on track . .

I never liked my ARs that much . . . had them pretty much for 3 guns where there was no heavy metal class . . . . I just traded a RR M4 clone for a beautiful correct grade April 1943 Springfield Garand with several hundred rnds of LC surplus ball. Even Steven.

Now that there is a man's rifle.

I agree with the poster above regarding the first shot being a kill shot. I have several Uncles and the FIL who used the Garand in combat . . said even if you wing 'em . . . it'll take their arm off and spin them around and slam them into the ground.

FWIW . . me and my buddy m1a_scoutguy will be the old guys at the 3-guns in NY this summer with the Garands, 12ga pumps and 1911s . . . we usually take the squirrel gunners to school on the long range stuff . .
