go to the CMP website for the specific serial numbers of both manuf. which identify rifles in the "low number" range. IIRC SA rifles 800,000 sn# and below are in this range and can't recall about RIA.

If you verify it's not a low number rifle and it headspaces ok, then you have a nice find there.
There are no 03A3s or REMINGTON made 03s which are "unsafe" to shoot. Only the lower number Springfield and Rock Island 03 receivers may have had an issue with heat treat.

I can't believe all y'all are leading this poor guy astray. That rifle will cause your babies to be born naked. Send me the seller's info and I'll get it off the market. It's for the children.

Thanks from wbm

What he said! Screw the "refinished so it lowers the value" crap. That is a very good price.

I traded a Handy Rifle a couple years ago for a 1943 1903 A3. Best trade I ever made. Found a new barrel made in 1944....was still in the brown paper wrapper with cosmoline...and got it for $85. After the gunsmith put it on he said "check out the bore." I did and it looked like a mirror! No kidding. He said that labor was cheap then and lot's of barrels were hand lapped. The barrel was a two groove but don't let anyone tell you they won't shoot heavy bullets. They will!

I had my bolt scout built with a 2 groove A3 from 1943. Handloads with 165gr SPs are sub MOA at 100.

my mistake and apologies to the OP, I only zeroed in on the '03' and not the 1943 manuf date, this is not a worry with this rifle however HS should be verified prior to shooting any rifle unfamiliar or new to you.

I'm sure the unsafe 03s were all Rock Island Armory?

Remington 03-A3, 1943

I believe the issue over high number/low number/ safe-unsafe is irrelevant.

It only effects early 1903's and NOT the 03A3's I believe.
By 1943, I believe the heat treatment was no longer an issue..I think that's what made the Low Number 1903's a big question that resulted in them being pulled from regular US Service.

03's and O3-A3's are a different breed........

Here's a 1918 dated 1903 to show what one looks like. Technically, it's an 03A1 because of the C stock it had when it was re-barreled in 1943:

The main difference is the ladder sight in front of the bolt. The 03a3's have an external rear sight mounted behind the bolt at the back of the receiver.

Your price is excellent, even if it needs a little TLC to bring it back to original, as-issued configuration...imho

Nope, Springfield Armory had the same "issues". Serial numbers below 800,000 or so for Springfield and 287,00 for RIA. The exact serial numbers are on the CMP website for both RIA and Springfield.

Yes it does only affect M1903 Rifles and NOT M1903A3 rifles, see the link below.

1903-A3 with Redfield Jr. mount

Gentlemen ,
I have verified it to have been made by Remington in 11-'43, the correct turned down & back bolt. Low 4 million serial #. I has bee redone which ruins it's collectivity, but it was beautifuuly redone. beautiful 4 land bore . Can't wait to shoot it.

Gentlemen,
I shot the 03A3 today. As I said earlier it has been refinished but it is a Great shooter. I got a 3/4" & a 1 1/8" group using 150 gr. Sierra Bt, 60 grs. RL19, Rem. cases, Fed 215 mag pr. The best of 12 shots. The 03 does kick. I am fairly tolerant to recoil. I was getting sore after 9 rds. Guess I'm just an old pussey. Would you believe I paid $300 for this rifle? I know ,Pics. I am having trouble transferring from the web to here. I want to Gloat and proove it.

My 03a3 is an extremely accurate rifle.....I love it. Good luck with yours...just picked up a 1934 made 1903 that, although has some incorrect parts, is in extremely nice shape. have yet to shoot it, yet!
