M1 Carbin Butt Stock Ammo Pouch

Hi Folks,

I just recently read on a internet wiki that due to the common practice of the GIs using the belt mount style M1 carbine ammo pouches as butt stock slip on pouches, the Army, seeing the value of this, actually made a true Butt Stock version pouch that was made to fit the M1 Carbin stock and issued it during the war.

I have never seen anything but the common belt mount style (has the brass snap in the back, and is a tight fit over the butt)

Is this other pouch a reality or just an urban legend? does someone have a picture of one? Where would you get one?

Urban legend. No pouch was ever made for this just good ole GI ingenuity
There are two types of pouches, one with a single loop that will fit on stock and the double loop which will not fit

The single loop pouch will not slip over the but end but installs from the front

Oh I see what you meant by slip-on. Ha. I was thinking of the only kind I've ever seen, which is what I have. (goes on from the front and fits snug).

Wasn't sure myself so I thought I would ask.

Wikipedia made it sound like they did by saying:

Quote:
Perhaps the most common accessory used on the M1 Carbine was a magazine pouch that was mounted to the right side of the stock and held two spare 15-round magazines. At first, these were standard belt pouches that were modified by the troops in the field to fit on the M1 Carbine's stock. However, the military soon recognized the value of these stock pouches and made them a standard-issue item.

That information is easy to interpret incorrectly.

I will credit Wikipedia for information, but I have found many information pages that are either wrong, or hard to reveal the accuracy. I changed one of the 3.5 rocket launcher pages one time and the original guy wrote me a very evil note, and threatened to get me expelled.

He was missing some important information so I sent him a link on my site for an image and he used it. He never appoligized. I did not care because now his information was being corrected.
