| New Springfield Armory Inc. Garands????
I am finally plunging into the M1 Garand world and was looking for one of Springfield Armory Inc.'s new rifles they released a few years ago. A quick check of their website revealed they were no longer listed as being offered.
Can anyone tell me what happened to them???
Thanks,
--Brian

Sales were slow; There was no real point as "real" M1 Garands were plentiful and much cheaper (and some would argue better).
If you haven't heard of the CMP, go there, learn about the requirements, send in your paperwork, and get a service grade shipped to your door. Or if you want a "new" Garand, a "special" grade. :) http://www.thecmp.org/Sales/rifles.htm |

That has changed and I feel that I should have one (at least) in my small collection.
I like the look of the Special Grade, and having those new parts may be just what I am looking for. I want to shoot it, not just collect them and keep them in a safe. I used to do that with other guns and never got to really enjoy them the way they were intended to be enjoyed!
Thanks again!!

No prob! IMO if you want a shooter the Service grade is the deal of the year. My last 2 service grades have had nearly new metal. One came with a new birch commercial stock, and the other with a nearly unused GI walnut.
I have a special grade as well. But I'd let it go before I gave up the service grades, I think.
But buy either one and you won't be disappointed. CMP customer service is tops and they'll make sure you're happy.
Some pics and vids to whet your whistle. Yes, buy one now before they run out again, IMO. Even at current prices it's still a good deal on the coolest rifle ever made. |

1KPerDay, thanks for posting pics!! I sent in the paperwork for an HRA Service Grade about 3 weeks ago....maybe I will get it in February; can't wait. Hopefully, mine will look as good as your Service grades; your's look to be in great condition.
JerseyDevil, I have ordered from the CMP in the past and they have always been great to deal with. Also, I recommend joining the Grand Collectors Association for your club requirement, they have good info as well. It is worth the time it takes to fill out all the paperwork.

I can answer your question about the SAI Garands because I have one in my Garand collection. Several years back a friend of mine knew that his days were numbered and he called several of his select friends and told them that he was selling his gun collection and for us to drop by at our convenience and see what we'd like to purchase. He was trying to raise money for his soon to be widow and he didn't want her to have to have to go through the hassles of unloading his very extensive collection.
Several of us called him and we dropped by one day after lunch. I noticed the Springfield Armoury Inc Garand and ask him his price. He said he'd bought it new and had never got around to shooting it. He had a bayonet with sheath along with a USGI Garand magazine web gear ammo pouch with ten loaded Garand clips, along with a leather USGI sling on the rifle.
I asked him what he wanted for it and he said, to you, $300.00. I paid him and then told him that I would always cherish the rifle and give it a good home. He died a short time later and I've never gotten around to shooting it either since I've owned it and probably won't.
Back when this rifle was built by SAI in the late 70s early 80s, they had some problems with them and I saw recalls issued on some of them. I don't know if this one was included in the recall and I guess I ought to call SAI and find out.
I also have a DCM M-1 (now known as the CMP) that I paid $169.00 for. Four of us shot the three required matches, jumped through all of the hoops, including finger printing and we all ended up with four gorgeous M-1 Garands.
Mine is in a lovely Birch stock and appears to be brand new. I know that it had to have been rearsenaled at some point in the past. However due to life and a career getting in the way, I haven't shot it either.
I also have my dad's IHC Garand that I had rebarrelled with the proper LMR barrel as well as Blue Sky Imports M-1 brought back from Korea. I looked for several years at all of the gun shows before I was able to find the correct LMR barrel for my dad's Garand.
One of my buds that shot the DCM matches sold me the take off barrel from his DCMM-1 for $100.00. He'd had a Douglas heavy barrel installed on his rifle and didn't need or want the take off barrel. He even took my former Blue Sky Imports M-1 down to Fort Benning and he paid the retired Army armourer to have his DCM barrel installed on my rifle for the $100.00 I'd paid him for his excellent DCM barrel.

1KPerDay,
WOW!!!! They are some awesome Garands there!! Thank you very much for taking the time to post up those pix and vids!
I agree...every American male should have to own a Garand by law....LOL!!!
I am off to the CMP website again to download the order form....I am inspired!

7th,
That is a very touching story about your friend. I always like hearing about friends helping out other friends in bad times. I hope that Garand stays with you forever.
I do have a few questions about the CMP:
I am a LEO here in NJ and I belong to the PBA. Does that satisfy the requirement of belonging to an affiliated marksmanship club?
If so, then I meet all the requirements and just have to send in my complete notarized application and I should be good to go.
Thanks,
--Brian

No it does not, I believe. It will cover your training/match requirement if you send in a copy of your commission card. You can join the Garand Owners Assn or many state clubs or ranges are affiliated. I think there's a list availble on the CMP website.
As for the SAI M1 Garand. I was a FFL back in the 80's and 90's and sold a few of the SAI Garands and ended up with a SAI NM Garand which I shot in matches for about three years. I can find no fault with it and it out shoots my service grades handily, which I would expect with the NM barrel and sights. It was also glass bedded from the factory.
As has been stated the CMP has Garands of varying quality and is probably the way to go these days. I wouldn't go for anything less than a SG unless you can hand pick one. Enjoy!!

| Yes, it does. But I would still look into joining one of the area clubs to take advantage of it and get some rounds downrange. My first time shooting a Garand was back in the late 60's at Cherry Ridge with out PAL Rifle Club. Quote:
In addition to shooting clubs, the CMP also has several special affiliates. Membership in these organizations satisfies our requirement for purchase. They include: Congressionally chartered veterans' organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV, MCL, etc., U.S. Military services (active or reserves), National Guard, to include retirees.
Finally, professional 501(c)3 law enforcement organizations and associations such as the FOP, NAPO, NSA, etc are included.

Ok, good then I am getting ready to do this CMP thing. I should have done this years ago, but that is typical of me :)
Anyway, I was having a look at the CMP site and I am stuck between a Correct Grade and a Special Grade........any preferences here?????
