Thanks Capt. Bob, thats that kind of info I need on the back of that site. Now I just don't like it covering my maker's stamp (its a rockola) guess I am vain that way!

As for the barrel/shell situation, its hard to know what normal is. If everyone is getting those marks, then is it a case of everyone basically shooting surplus barrels, so the marks are normal (that is, its what everyone sees so no one questions that condition?)

I don't think that's bad, these rifles are hardy and I am sure I can shoot it for some time. I can also have the barrel replaced at any time, I would just prefer to do it while there are still barrels and armorer around that know how.

When you talked about discoloration we though you were describing shooty cases which is completely normal.
Its still hard to tell by you pics and your description what is going on with the cases.
Did the smith check headspace? If headspace is fine and it shoots well you are worrying about nothing. Shoot it until headspace grows to much or until you arent happy with accuracy
No need spending$$$ if you dont need to

m1jerm;

Check with the paper clip as I described above. If you feel any catch take it to a GOOD gunsmith to check the headspace. However, your cases look just like mine do. My carbine is a CMP Underwood that was headspace checked by me as soon as I got home with it.

hey m1jerm. please post a pik of the right side of the receiver / sight area. i went & pulled out my closest carbine, a npm. it has the same style late stamped sight as yours, but mine has never been staked. however my rear sight does not have the little ears yours does. my sight says i.r.co. 7160060 on it & the dove on it is straight all the way across. thanks

So, after a couple days of fiddling and trying to build my own rear sight removal tool, I am declaring defeat. I can't bang it out with a punch either. Maybe the original owner could not complete the task either an that is why it ended up coming to me in this condition.

This may be taboo, but is there anyone out there willing to loan me the tool to adjust this thing? This is not an odd request over on the Swiss Rifle forum, I often see guys loaning out threaders that only good for a single use. I would be willing to "rent" the tool from someone, paying for shipping, and it would be a good way for someone to recoup cost on a tool they had not used very often.

Again, I understand not loaning tools, but how's about a rental?

is the rear sight dove groove a "one way" direction milling? Many have a slight pinch to them and require the sight to be inserted and removed a in one direction only.

Well, as can be seen from the photos, its probably going to have com out left to right no matter what, and all my hammering and drifting is just not working.

It is odd that those two prongs on the right side seem like they are too big to fit into the slot though.

If there was a pinch, the only way to know is going to be to get that thing out and that has to happen left to right at this point.

Got tired of trying it the old fashioned way, with hammer and a drift, and gave in to buying a tool for it.
Now, these things are expensive, so i have an idea. Is there any sort of "rental" plan here on the site? Because, I can't imagine needing this thing more than a couple times in my life, so, I wouldn't mind renting the tool out occasionally, it could save a lot of people a lot of time and money and they probably won't have to beat the crap out of thier sights to drive them out. Its that or I just sell the thing at a discount and call it a loss, but I figure this way, I might be able to help people out offset some of the cost of the tool.
I will post up when I finally get the thing adjusted and hopefully sighted in. Maybe by that time I will learn more about the shells as well, that is, I will have a few more examples to look at and see if anyone thinks there's a problem there. It should take a couple weeks.

So, the tool did the deed, and very easily. Its brass push point did rub off on my sight a little, but most of transfer seems to have rubbed off. The area that appeared to be completely touching he bottom of the sight was slight dirty/corroded, so I wiped off most of the grime. The Rockola stamp is still there but seems to have suffered with age, maybe it was very corroded and them cleaned and reparked as you can see surface distortion on the receiver under there. I am thinking it got rusty at some point and someone went to town on it, barely sparing the Rockola mark. I should have tried to take pics of that, but I want to go out and do some shooting with it this weekend and since I have the tool I know I can take it off any time I like.

Still, did not want to have to spend the money on that tool, I will probably resell it to somebody who can get more use from it.
