Yes, you can use it in CMP matches. After shooting an M1 Garand an '03 can be a real eye opener. But it is still a blast.

Smith Corona 03a3 rifles used High Standard as a barrel contractor they were 4 groove barrels and marked with the SC stamp, rumor has it that at the start of SC rifle production H-S used 6 groove barrels that they had for some odd reason when the stock was used up production resumed with 4 groove barrels.

S-C only made 03a3 rifles

Remmington made both 03 and 03a3 rifles, 03 production was always 4 groove barrels/replacement barrels. 03a3 barrels started as 4gr and ended with 2gr.

High Standard made replacemant 03 barrels, there marked H-S they have a very good reputation for there accuracy, there replacment 03 4 groove barrels are in much demand, many of the old 03 shooters from back in the day say the H-S barrerls shoot as well or better than the SA barrels with the star guage. So I think H-S is in some pretty good company.

I have heard that RA 2 groove barrels either shoot or they don't, lite/heavy or cast they work or they don't.

Don't need a pad with a shooting jacket. Really not that bad. I shoot 8mm k98 German Mausers though. Anything less is now a breeze.

Just roll with the recoil and hold it tight. I shoot M1903s all the time in a t-shirt and I'm no tough guy or anything.

My RA 03A3 with 2 groove doesn't like 168 or 173 A-Max, but it shoots as good with HXP (greek surplus from CMP) as my other SA 03 and SC 03A3 with 4 groove.
All these are CMP rifles, and some pitting does apply.

Cheers!

I second Gus, when shooting in the prone with a tight sling be careful with butt placement around your collar bone. I have experienced the pain myself from this after only 5 rnds.

From what I can gather it is a smith and corona bolt. The barrel is marked R A (flaming bomb) 6 42. The barrel is dusty and needs a cleaning. I have been looking at the rifle since the day they put it on the shelf a few months ago.
My understanding is these were the first Model 1903's that Remington made in 1941 - 1942, before simplifying production that led to the 1903A3.
