Model of 1917 Questions

Just picked up a M1917. From what I can see it is all original. It is an Eddystone receiver that dates Sept 1918, barrel is marked 9-18 and every part I can see has an "E" stamp. Stock has the arrow with a C around it. This means it was supposed to be a Canadian issue? Judging by the look of it and the date I have the feeling it never shipped from Penn. before the war ended. Also there is no red paint on the stock that the Canucks were so fond of doing from what I have found.

There is also what looks like a bracketed 5 or 151 stamped near the C stamp on the stock (clearly visible in the pictures). I am not an expert on the 1917, so any explanations on the markings or other information would be great. Got it for $600, pretty sure I did well.

Actually the red paint was put on 1917s that were loaned to Britain during WW II so the Brits could tell at a glance whether it was a 1917 or a Pattern 14, which was chambered in .303. Afa the arrowhead stamp on the stock, it looks like the stamp one of the British Arsenals used. It's possible the stock on your 1917 was replaced with a Pattern 14 stock.

I had a M17 years ago that had a broad arrow in a circle stamped on the receiver by the serial number, and if you looked close enough at the wood grain at the front of the stock you could just make out a little red paint.

Fine looking rifle you have there. Thanks for taking the time to post those pics.
As a tidbit of information, that rifle was made during WW1 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, PA and was run by Remington. If you have ever watched the old tv show "Petticoat Junction", the old steam locomotive, The Cannonball" has the Badlwin Locomotive Works painted on it.

How is the barrel on your M1917? I'd say for every 25 M1917 rifles I see with original barrels, only one of them was a decent bore.
I got one from a friend at work and the rifle metal & wood was great except the bore. The bore and chamber literally had chunks of metal missing from firing corrosive ammo. I bought a new rifle barrel from CMP and had it put on. The Gunsmith had a devil of a time getting the old barrel off, had to cut parts of it off first. This new criterion barrel has won me many Gold metals at Camp Perry. It really shoots!

The bore is in amazing shape, looks like it has almost never been fired. Looking at the bolt face it appears to have been shot, judging by the wear, but it must have not been much. A few run throughs with a bore snake and it was beautiful. My s/n is 104xxxx

I have 4 Model 1917 all eddystone's one is a CMP gun with a very low SN range 37000 range, it's bore is rough..the other guns are a lot higher SN ranges, two guns have good bores and two have rough bores.. I think the worst is the CMP early gun but all are date 1918 barrels. They all are shootable as is, even the dark barrels.. are fine for a shooter..plinker.. I've thought about getting another replacement barrel, but not sure I want to invest the extra $$ in them right now.. I do love the fact that they hold seven rounds.. 06 very cool bolt gun.. B2B
