From experience I can tell you the exact opposite. Yes, some people ask more than what they paid but quite a few only ask that you cover their original shipping + what they paid for the rifle from the CMP. I have done this more than once with great success.

Thanks from Amsdorf

BTW I'll echo what others have said. If you can buy your first one from the CMP you will get a guaranteed rifle that isn't re-welded or import stamped. Unbeatable for their prices even if you have to wait 60-90 days.

Thanks for all the info, I've been working literally almost around the clock and have not had time to do anything about the rifle yet. Glad I waited.

One more question, about the CMP North store: I belong to an affiliated club, can I go to the store and buy one and take it home? If so do they have a good choice of rifles to choose from?

Fill out your paperwork and have it notorized ahead of time. If you belong to an affiliated club , you should be able to take your purchase home with you . I did the same thing at Perry a few years ago. It is really nice to have an assortment to look over. You will almost always find someone willing to give you a hand in chosing your new toy. Warning, purchasing weapons from CMP can be terminal. I am running out of space to put new safes. Thinking of joining a 12 step program.

Don't miss out on considering CMP's Special Grade M1 Garand. Superb to new stock sets, excellent to new barrels, excellent condition finish or reparkerized - basically all gaged out and ready to go. $ 995.00 plus $25.00 shipping. About the only improvement you might want before entering a John Garand match with the rifle is have a trigger job done.

All of the gun shows I have been to lately in my area have Garands starting a minimum of $700 +, just about every Garand in that $700 range looks like it was dragged to Berlin and back behind a Jeep.

It is also my opinion that a person should get their first Garand from the CMP. I think there is a much better chance to get a good functioning rifle in addition to getting one for a few hundred less than they are going for on the open market.
