For fit and finish, I like the HRAs. The recent batch of service grades has been exceptionally nice. HRA made considerably less than SA. Of course all HRAs are post war, so if WW2 is your thing get a Winchester or request a SA with a serial under 3.5 million.

I have been to the South Store several times, most recently the last week of Jan. In this latest batch of SG M1s, I have recieved 2 in the mail and seen 3 more. I am a firm believer that many of the best rifles are held back for mail order. I was actually disappointed when I went in Jan, as there were no rifles as nice as the two SGs I recieved the week before.

Just my experience, your mileage may vary

If this your very first Garand and you just want to get one to know what it is all about and enjoy shooting it, get a Service Grace and have a ball. Then you'll know if you want to buy more and really begin to get into Garand collecting.

I have six Garands.

One SA Service Grade
One SA Correct
Two SA Collector

One HRA Correct

And one old WW II warhorse that I had reparked and new stock.

So your reply to the OP is to have him re-state his question to "Which one should I buy first?" Like potato chips, you can't stop at one.
I say get the best you can afford, and if you can spring for a correct grade, they are awesome rifles in nearly new condition.
