The U.S. definitely got caught with it's pants down at the beginning of the conflict and the actual fighters paid the price for it. The first guys were sent in short handed and poorly equipped, a lot of what they did have was either obsolete or in poor shape. I read one account were GIs were sent to face NK armor with only machine guns and ineffective bazookas. One of the guys said in the rare instance a bazooka round actually worked it wasn't strong enough to actually do any damage to the tanks.
