yes, this rifle had to have been a beauty, the wood matches perfect. my bolt is toast. i could not get the bolt apart. the ejector would depress but the extractor would only move a little. i tried getting a little rough but all that did was try to bugger the plunger on my bolt tool. i had to resort to dremmel the extractor plunger tip off. firing pin has severe corrosion but ejector & extractor look fine. go figure. the extractor plunger is stuck hard so i am trading for an nos 65 series loaded bolt. it will wind up at shuff's when i get my parts lined up, he has been doing all my park for years. stay tuned!

oh yeah as a side note, this rifle was dry. i mean, not a sign of any lube anywhere. no oil, grease, nothing. he had to have been firing it this way

thats pretty sweet. your project reminds me of a few articles I read over the years in the GCA Journal.
I cant wait to see your continuing progress

To USMC6094's comment above, this would make a great story for a future GCA edition. Best of luck Andy!

Trade...

Let's see....You got rid of a Carcano and got an M1 Garand in return.

Regardless of condition, you came out on top on that trade! You can rebuild it and have something worth hanging on to when you're done.

all i wanted at the onset was a display garand, but here we go. i just couldn't junk it. my bud has a cai receiver i may get so i will have a bolt, a barrel & rec for a display start. i thought about a gca article but my picture taking eqpt (&skills) are questionable, i get more shadows than substance. i could of put this rifle back for the grandson to build when he gets older, but i think i have a garand or two stashed for him later on. gonna try to be shooting it by my birthday in march. i got a barrel & sights coming from a forum member (thanks!) so ball rolling. stay tuned, same garand time, same garand channel!

smc51.....

I assume you were in the 8th? In Germany? I was in the 8th...stationed at Lee Kaserne, in Mainz, with the 1st of the 504th (Airborne). Spent two years there in the early 60s...loved it!

I agree with Hump... except that the Red River ones will wear a "boxed" P (the proof P is in a square)...

creampuff update: i have sent creampuff & an '03 to one of my buds to have the barrels spun off. i have three nos 65 series sa bolts coming from bulgaria of all places. in one of my tm's it has a section on repairing cracks in stocks. so, the stock will get repaired depot style & re-finished. when i get my rec back all parts are headed to shuff for a park & barrel install. i got a sa 1951 nos barrel for it. so, a new bolt & barrel, spring kit, re park & stock work. stay tuned!
