"New" to me M1 Carbine

Just took this one off layaway. "Merry Christmas Me." DI2 This leaves 2 M1's still to be acquired, 03 and Garand, if I were to try and pursue this angle in my collection. And possibly another M1A since my original loaded is in EBR form. Judas, how anal is that?
Annnywaaay. This is a 1944 Inland Carbine with an Inland barrel. I believe it has a Winchester mag catch, National Postal Meter rotary safety, Quality Hardware front barrel band with Bayonet lug and I don't know what else yet. I got to choose from 3 so I picked what I thought was the nicest. Stock seems in good shape as well as the metal considering its age. Bore, lands and grooves look really good.
I'm currently looking on GB for period correct mag pouch for the stock along with a sling and oiler as well as some extra vintage 15 and 20 rd mags. Oh and a nice vintage US Bayonet and Scabbard($$$GI3).

Now the question is do I go and search out the parts that are made by Inland and replace all the non matching parts on there. I understand its my rifle and I can do what I want but does that make it more desirable or valuable to have an Inland rifle with all Inland parts including the mags and oiler? Or do I just go out and shoot it because its already as good as it gets? Thanks.

I'm unsure what to tell you on the parts issue. My thoughts (as I was told and unsure if it's correct) but it's more valuable if it all maches the origianl manufacturer. I have an all original Winchester M1 Carbine. Fired 15 rounds through it just to say it fires. TE is less than 2 and I want to keep it that way. It's hanging up once my man room is complete. All I need is an original to the period sling, all the rest I have is Winchester parts and is clean as a whistle.

Hopefully someone else can tell you what you need to know on your issue. I do know finding the original time period slings are a PITA.

I would add to this that even when of new manufacture, often M1 Carbines were made up of parts from a variety of manufacturers.
In fact, if I were offered an "all correct" one, where every part was from a single manufacturer, I would likely take extra steps to check it's authenticity if possible.
Too many people have created fakes by swapping out parts, then selling them as "correct"..

If you haven't done so yet, go to the CMP's (Civilian Marksmanship Program) forum website and ask your questions there. A bunch of good guys with a LOT of knowledge when it comes to M-1 Garands and Carbines. They can tell you when the rifle was made and what its as-issued configuration was from the factory.
Just register and you're good to go. BTW, the CMP is selling M-4 Carbine bayonets for $15, but they are in Rack grade (usable but with problems) and no scabbards. Handles may be either leather or plastic; luck of the draw unless you travel to the stores (Alabama and Ohio). The forum's website has links to the main page where you can see what the qualifications are for buying from the CMP. And you can still buy M-1 Garands there at better prices than almost anywhere else.
As for retrofitting parts to an "original-issue", be aware that there will be indicators to any knowledgeable person that it's been changed back. Stake marks, finish colorization and parts changes are just some of the clues. And back-dating the gun doesn't really add any value to the gun, but can be very expensive, time consuming and difficult to accomplish. But, like you said it's your gun and you can do what you want to with it.

Back in the 90's, everyone was trying to make their carbines "Correct." However, the rise in cost of parts, lesser availability, etc., etc. makes this not so desireable today.

If your carbine orginally came with the flip sight, then you should check carefully to see if the sight dovetail in the receiver was staked. If it was staked to tighten it up for the adjustable sight, then most collectors will tell you NOT to try to make the carbine "all correct" as the stake marks will scream it is a reconversion and you could spend a LOT of money making it "correct" and never get your money back.

The other problem with trying to make a carbine "all correct" is finding the correct parts in the correct finish that will match your receiver and barrel. That is getting pretty difficult nowadays. If the parts do not match, then there is not much added value in replacing parts to make it correct.

If you get all correct parts and have all the metal parts reparkerized, that also will not add a lot of value, though it can make it more pleasing to you and could be easier to sell. Of course, if most or a whole lot of the original parkerizing is gone, then getting all the parts reparked will increase the value as much or slightly more than the cost of parkerizing.

Confusing, isn't it?

Now, if after learning all this, you STILL want to reconvert your carbine to all correct parts, that is completely up to you.

Thanks guys. I did join the CMP forum and they have been offering up helpful advice as well. And Gus, your input is always welcomed and gives me a lot to consider. I also took note of your thread concerning "M2" markings. I'm safe.
Its easy to talk about rifles as investments but in the end I rarely consider selling any of my babies because I enjoy them all. So value tends to be a formula in my own mind. So I suppose I will find a balance between correct parts, appearance, cost and enjoyment.
I have since found that I have quite a few Winchester parts on this one. The sickness I have is telling me to find a Winchester Carbine and donate some parts from the Inland. In turn I would use the remainder of the components from both rifles to source parts to make a Winchester and Inland whole and correct.

With Garands, this affliction is named "Garanditis." So maybe you are developing "Carbinitis." Grin.

I often hear the arguments about 'corrected' verse 'original' carbines all the time and I have developed my own opinion on the subject.....

I was in the military during the m16 era and our unit armorours were always working on their weapons - changing worn parts, etc... Very seldom would a rack rifle still be in the 'as issued' condition after a couple years of unit use, but it would still be 100% authentic if found today.

So when I look at a carbine, I use the thought process that it could be one of 4 catagories:

1) "Authentic USGI" mix master. - this could still be 'correct' for it's time and be a unit modified/maintained rifle with proper configurations of its day, but is not exactly how it came from the factory. It may even have era correct 'upgrades'

2) Arsenal Rebuild - this is a rifle that has been in and out of the inventory of multiple units during multiple campaigns and most likely has upgrades and stamps to show it's colorful past.

3) "As Issued" - this, to me, is the ultimate collector grade rifle and I expect this rifle to be with all original parts and in the exact configuration it left the factory in. I think this is as rare as hen's teeth but some are out there.

4) "Corrected to orignal configuration" This is the level of my carbine. It has been fully audited and had the parts all verified (or replaced if necessary) with appropriatly marked parts that should have/could have been assembled at the factory by the prime manufacture and time of issue for the weapon.

(BTW- there is also the re-imports but I am not making a catagory for them.)

As the M1 Carbine is not rare enough to be "museum pieces' (they made alot of them) the value of a carbine in catagory 1 verse catagory 2 verse catagory 3 is not going to be a huge difference, so, for me at least, it was a fun project to have the rifle put back into 'corrected' configuration and reparkarized. I enjoy it very much and shoot it regularly and for those who turn up their noses on the fact it is a 'retstored' rifle, well, okay, it makes me happy, and I like the fact it is an accurate representation of the iconic rifle in as close to orginal ww2 issued condition as I can make it and as long as future purchasers of this carbine are aware that it is "restored" then no harm done....

Just my humble opinion.... GI1

I posted this in another thread already but thought it appropriate for this thread too. I did not create this list, I copied it from another site but it is a very good list for reference when trying to ID a mixmaster as it is a very comprehensive list. (many thanks to the originator of this list!)
