I got my Mark 1 out of the hidey hole this weekend for the first time in 10 or 12 years and wiped it off before putting it back in the case. I may take it to the range and shoot it for the first time in 26 or 28 years. That short little stock just kicks the crap out of me. I've found my 03A3 and 03A4 to much more comfortable to shoot as they both have longer butt stocks.

I just picked up a Springfield M1903 Mark 1 yesterday SN 103XXXX. Looks like it has the original barrel (marked 11/18) with a bright and shiney bore and perfect muzzle crown. Looks to be blued and its about 90-95% there. Only thing weird about it is that the stock has no markings at all and it doesn't have the finger grooves. The stock also has pins where the others I have seen have rivets or bolts? The rifle does not have the Mark 1 sear and trigger in it either but it does have the Petersen device ejection hole. Can't wait to try it out over the weekend.

Gotta add my 1918 03A1 to the show...a Greek Return with a restored NOS Springfiled Stock, rebarreled in 1942.

A few more photos. Anyone have any idea if the stock is correct for this rifle? Also what would you say about its condition?

Anyway, from what I can see the condition looks fantastic, but only you know what the bore looks like, how it shoots. I think the Mark I's were double heat treated and should be safe, but go to an expert on that - see a smith with some gages and really go over it.

Your stock is for a 1903A3 from 1942 to early 1943. Because you have a straight handle bolt you may want to replace it with a bent handle bolt before firing the rifle, unless the bolt is marked J5 on the safety lug.

All of those are beautiful 03's. I was looking at the M1903A3 section on the CMP site and there is no price. Can anyone tell me what CMP is charging for these.

Beautiful old '03 and the stock could be original. The JFC cartouche was used up to 1918. Your early serial number should have a stock with no cross bolts, IIRC, but often times they were added later to reinforce the stock. I have a very nice '03 from 1922 that has a earlier stock that should only have one cross bolt, but has two...
I love the looks of those old finger grooved stocks and that fancy script lettering on the receiver.
If you ever decide to part with that old rifle, let me know. |

Old post I know, but F1Fanatic if you are looking for an '03 Sarco Inc. has them listed in their shotgun news ad. They are listing both original 03's and 03A3's. I have never dealt with Sarco personally, so you might want to ask around.

@ NYCSTRIPES
I've heard of counter-boring barrels being done by depots as a means to retain accuracy, but have never seen one or owned one. If it was properly done by trained folks then it isn't a bad thing, but bubba-fied is a different matter. I'm sure it must look "off" when you look at crown. I understand your apprehension, unless it was from CMP or a know source you are smart to get it changed out.
